The actress talks living a simple life with her husband in their "cabbage."

“Sweet, simple things in life, they are the best and most important.”

These wise words of Melissa Gilbert little House on the Prairie The character, Laura Ingalls Wilder, became associated with the actress after all these years.

In Gilbert’s new book, Back to the Prairie: A Home Remade a Life RediscoveredShe talks about quarantining during the coronavirus pandemic and living a life away from Hollywood at her home in the Catskill Mountains in New York.

Reflecting on the pandemic, the 58-year-old actress told ET’s Rachel Smith, “When you’re going through something like this, we really realize what you need and what you want.”

“I think we were really focused on wanting, wanting, wanting, wanting, collectively and I hope we remember what’s really important,” she continued. “Things that were really taken away from us. Community was taken away from us, our families were taken away from us, some people lost their loved ones and dear friends permanently, our jobs were taken away from us. Life completely changed Gone and the things that really matter is what we love the most and the things that bring us the most peace and comfort.”

Gilbert found comfort in her Catskills home, which she calls “cabbage,” which she shares with her husband, Timothy Busfield. After leaving Hollywood behind and settling in the state, Gilbert admitted to ET that her life was somewhat reminiscent of how Laura Ingalls lived with her family. little House on the Prairie,

“Cabbage is very relaxing,” Gilbert said of her stay at home with her husband in 2019. “My life is a lot more tender right now. I don’t have the burning ambition that I used to have.”

Gilbert acted little House on the Prairie From 1974 to 1983, and during his time on the show, Gilbert said he had the right mix of prairie life and rural California life, giving him a glimpse of the life he wanted.

“I loved being on set,” she said. “I loved being around horses and chickens. I would go home at the end of the day to our lush rural life for my work and my schoolwork and all that and our nice house in the San Fernando Valley. But I had to stay outside. I loved being in nature, and I’ve always wanted to do that in my life.”

Now that she has that piece of nature, the only piece of California she misses is her family. “I don’t miss the pressure. I don’t miss the race. I don’t miss the competition. I don’t miss feeling bad because I’m not short and thin,” she said. “I miss Los Angeles. I miss not only the city. I miss my mom and I miss my sister and my nephews, and I miss my kids who live there and my granddaughters and my sweethearts who live there. Staying away from those people is the hardest part. But everyone else? I do not remember.”

For some, it would be difficult to leave the world you were more familiar with, but for Gilbert, this is his third act.

She told ET, “I feel like I’ve finally reached a point and place in my life where I wanted and wanted to have a peaceful, orderly, calm existence.” “A lot of trauma and drama is gone from my past and I have moved on from it. I want to get over it in many different ways and I made a conscious decision not to do anything in my life that is peaceful and calm.” No, especially with the cabbage step. And that’s how I chose to live the last third of my life.”

If there’s one person who can put Gilbert’s current life in the perspective of the outside world, it’s her husband of nearly 10 years, who has said it’s perfectly clear who he is next to his book.

“I love what goes on in this book so much because it’s an incredible love letter from my partner in life,” she said of Busfield. “But it’s also that he’s so honest and so revealing about who I am and who he sees me as and I think it really gives people an inside.”
