Meet Lia Rodrigues, the Brazilian who wants to enchant the world

the choreographer Lia Rodrigues not only celebrates that his piece Delighted will be witnessed at the BAM theater in New York, the Brazilian also celebrates with drums and cymbals that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, previous president of Brazil, received the next round of presidential elections in October. He is aware a very little much more about the choreographer and his dance corporation.

What was it that impressed you to build Delighted?

It was born from the desire to use magic and enchantment as guides for our artistic approach. How to enchant our ideas and our bodies, transforming them into photos, dances and landscapes? In the Afro-Indian society of Brazil, enchanted also designates an entity amongst the worlds of the residing and the dead, an entity discovered in character. Enchanted is like one more possible eyesight of the earth, non-Western, non-Eurocentric. It is a fiction about Brazil.

How extended did it acquire you to generate this choreography?

I begun thinking and working on a new creation at least two many years in advance. It is a very long solitary approach of looking through and investigation. I took notes, I wrote. From 1 development to an additional, there are often discoveries, circumstances change, we have new ‘problems’ to solve, and the activities with which we dwell and converse modify us. All this mobilizes me ahead of the confront-to-facial area assembly with the artists who will be aspect of the creation. We got alongside one another, the 11 dancers, my assistant and I to start doing the job all-around April/Could 2021. And ‘Enchanted’ had its premiere in Paris in December 2021.

How did you make the decision of music?

I worked with the musician Alexandre Seabra and alongside one another we look for some sonorities. He recorded the sound of a maraca, -the maraca is 1 of the greatest-identified Brazilian indigenous devices-, and we also labored with some voices. Then we look into sounds and come across excerpts from music of the Guarani MBYA people today, -Kalipety village of TI Tenondé Porã-.

What can men and women hope from this job?

Enchanted invites creativeness, goals, contentment and pleasure, a hard process in these dim times. But we ought to be in a position to chortle at the absurdities, to expose the contradictions, to inform other tales of survival and passion, with distinctive prospects of lifetime, populated by human and non-human figures that we do not know. And pleasure can be a way of resisting.

To this day, what would you say has been the most difficult detail you have faced in your inventive vocation?

Until these days and continue to nowadays the lack of support from the federal, condition and municipal governments of Brazil for the upkeep of my perform as an artist. For more than 6 decades, my initiatives have survived many thanks to the financing of intercontinental establishments that understand that my inventive creations are deeply intertwined with the initiatives that I have been building for practically 20 yrs in the Maré favela in collaboration with Redes da Maré.

Your state has been reworked politically. Lula won the elections, when you observed out, what was the 1st matter you imagined?

[Me sentí] delighted for the reason that I believe in Lula’s undertaking for Brazil.

Do you imagine that with this election your country will change positively and in what way?

I imagine Lula’s election undoubtedly delivers hope. But we have a good deal of work ahead of us, mainly because in latest decades we have seasoned the destruction of democratic values, as perfectly as the file deforestation of the Amazon and the abandonment of education and learning, general public well being and lifestyle. In Lula’s govt program, he proposes vital modifications this kind of as protecting the rights and territories of indigenous peoples, quilombolas and conventional populations.
