It is a reunion with them, with Harry Potter, Hermione and Ron, that is with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson Y Rupert grint, but more than anything with nostalgia and genuine emotion, with a world and characters that set fire to boys and adolescents 20 years ago who are now greats, and to the greats that we take them to the movies.
And wait and see with what plane the directors chose to end the Special … A unique Expecto Patronum that makes our skin crawl.
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts has everything for fans to jump on their heads to see it. It is a documentary, a TV special that this January 1 premiered on HBO Max, in which the starring trio met, yes, at Hogwarts (on the royal sets) and Radcliffe also chatted with other performers, such as Gary Oldman and Helena Bonham Carter.

And then there are Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Toby Jones (voiced Dobby), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Jason Isaacs (his father, Lucius Malfoy) and the list goes on, as well as everyone. the directors of the saga.
Welcome (back) to Hogwarts
Everything starts with different actors who receive the invitation to return to Hogwarts, wherever they are. They accompany, of course, the chords of John Williams. The huge hall at Hogwarts is somewhat different, decorated for the occasion. The actors greet each other, some have not seen each other for years (the first film, HP and the philosopher’s stone, is from 2001), and we see a bearded Daniel Radcliffe.
Let’s see when we get together. Grint, Watson, Radcliffe and an original set from the saga. Photo HBO Max
Divided into chapters that bring together two films, the first one to speak with Daniel is Chris Columbus, who directed the first two of the saga after refusing three times, and because his daughter Eleanor convinced him to read the books. It tells of her meeting with JK Rowling – the author apparently was called to participate in the special, but she was not recorded, and images and words of her about the saga filmed in 2019, at the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, were included.
Friendship that does not die, this is the way of the three protagonists of the saga, which was shot in ten years. Photo HBO Max
Actors and filmmakers are in the Great Hall, the Gryffindor Common Room or the Potions Hall to remember how the castings were, the madness that was the sale of millions of copies of the book around the world, how Columbus discovered Radcliffe ( watching the BBC version of David copperfield on TV in London, and he said “That’s Harry Potter”), or as the contract for little Daniel was for 7 films and filming in Los Angeles, so his parents said “No, we cannot alter his life from that shape”.
And we already know what happened.
The special also shows the first camera test that Rupert, Daniel and Emma did together. Photo HBO Max
Or the first test of Daniel, Emma and Rupert, on August 9, 2000, immortalized with film clapperboard and all. “I had kidney stones and a daughter, so yeah, time passed,” says Rupert Grint (Ron), comfortably seated in the original sets.
It’s like the special of Friends, but with much more production and less wages paid to those who participate.
The Quidditch competition, it seems, was the hardest to shoot. Photo HBO Max
“The first few weeks the guys were basically in shock,” says Columbus, and is honest that he himself was eaten up by nerves. “We were boys acting like boys on set”, Daniel confides, and we see how they played Slam “and we all had red and raw hands,” remembers Emma. And so.
“I don’t remember feeling like I was working,” says Tom Felton (the evil Draco), and today he is surprised to be surrounded by the best British actors and have no idea who they were. “For a while I thought that Richard Harris – the original Dumbledore – was working as a guide.” They were surrounded by “the British royalty of the acting world”, as Columbus well defines.
The actors went through stages, like their characters, from childhood to adolescence … And adulthood. Photo HBO Max
Of course there are anecdotes that no fan knew. Like the candles that seemed to float, and were hanging from the ceiling, burned the threads that held them and began to fall through the Great Hall. Or secrets, like what was the most difficult scene in the saga?
And for those of us who hold that The prisoner of Azkaban is the best film in the saga, well, listening to Alfonso Cuarón and Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) talk about darkness and crossing the threshold between childhood and adolescence, and how Daniel and Oldman created the link between the characters and between them, it is priceless.
Whose wand was it that caused an explosion? Photo HBO Max
Or the memory of the filming of the scene in the House of Screams, with Tim Spall, Alan Rickman, David Thewlis and the leading trio. “I have never filmed a scene with such an incredible cast” says Cuarón, later director of Gravity Y Rome.
And there’s a reveal about Snape and Alan Rickman …
Mike Newell led the fourth, and broke a pair of ribs. Incredible, but you have to find out how it was.
The actors, in the beginning, played on the film set. Nor did they know what great stars accompanied them. Photo HBO Max
There are also secrets to the Yule Ball, or who fell in love with whom on set? There is one possible romance, but another is surprising.
Or how Ralph Fiennes who played The one who should not be named, like the essence of Evil, he made it without a nose. How did the death of Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson, whom in March we will see as the new Batman), and who almost left the saga affected, what was stolen from the set and whose magic wand, yes, it worked?
Final. Question: If you take the play, in which Harry is an adult, to the cinema, can’t Radcliffe perform it? Photo HBO Max
Do you know who wrote letters to JK Rowing? Or why did Alan Rickman know more about his character, even though the books to come had not yet been published?
And there is the memory of those who are gone, including Helen McCrory (Aunt Polly in Peaky blinders), the aforementioned Alan Rickman and Richard Harris, plus Richard Griffiths and John Hurt. Almost 30 have died.
“I love you,” Rupert Grint tells Emma Watson on the Special. Photo HBO Max
What was the last scene that Radcliffe, Watson and Grint filmed in this lasting alliance between friends? And the final battle?
“I measure my life with these movies. Someone says ‘When did you pass your driving test?’ And i say en The order of the Phoenix“says Rupert Grint.
If one is left wanting to see more, it is not because little is offered. Photo HBO Max
Thus, with genuine emotion I insist, it is seen, felt and enjoyed this special reunion for the fans.
