Kenan Thompson calls Will Smith’s hit on Chris Rock “disturbing and avoidable”

Emmy Awards host Kenan Thompson and the Producers of the ceremony predict a conflict-free zone, unlike the Oscars show which was marred by a slap on stage.

Thompson said the confrontation last March in which Will Smith attacked host Chris Rock over a prank directed at Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, It was disturbing and avoidable.

“Basically, it caught the whole world off guard, and that’s not going to happen again.”Thompson told The Associated Press. “Even if I’m roasting (someone), it shouldn’t look like any kind of malice.”

If a joke ends up stinging, he said, an apology and a conversation may be in order. But Rock, who “has not an iota of evil,” Thompson said, or any other comedian shouldn’t expect Smith’s reaction to a joke.

A first-time Emmy host, the veteran “Saturday Night Live” cast member is following in the footsteps of other “SNL” colleagues, including Michael Che, Colin Jost and Andy Samberg.

“This should be a night to appreciate art and creativity and take the stress out of it all. I get it, losing sucks, and everybody’s picking out outfits and trying to do the red carpet,” Thompson said. “But at the same time, it’s amazing to be in the room on Emmy night, and I don’t want that to get lost in the stress.”

Reginald Hudlin and Ian Stewart, who return as executive producers of the ceremony, think Thompson is perfect for the job.

“He is loved, and from the moment we announced him there has been nothing but positive responses,” Hudlin said. “He has great connections with everyone, and we’re going to maximize those connections… he’s the unofficial mayor of Hollywood.”
