A little history
The World Columbian Exposition was a universal exhibition that took place in Chicago, United States, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the New World in 1492, where there were replicas of the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María.
It was largely designed by John Wellborn Root, Daniel Burnham, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Charles B. Atwood. It became famous because the architectural display was the prototype of what Burnham and his peers believed a city should be.
It was wisely designed with the criteria of Beaux Arts architecture and the principles of French neoclassical architecture of symmetry, balance and splendor. The color of the material widely used for the building facades gave the exhibition grounds the nickname “White City”.
Many prestigious architects designed 14 large buildings. Artists and musicians participated in the show, many of whom also made performances and works of art inspired by the exhibition. The fairgrounds were immense and had 256 hectares.
