Jon Batiste surprises with 11 nominations, followed by Justin Bieber, HER and Doja Cat

Jon Batiste could be the biggest Grammys surprise. The recent Oscar winner made such an impression on voters that he garnered the most nominations on Tuesday: 11.

Batiste was nominated for album of the year by We are already recording of the year by Freedom, an optimistic ode to the city of New Orleans. His nominations span various genres, including R&B, jazz, American roots music., classical and film music.

Batiste obtained a mention in the section of best soundtrack for audiovisual media for his work in Soul from Pixar, which earned him the Academy Award for best original music earlier in the year.

The “return” of The Weeknd, without grudges

Along with Batiste’s surprising dominance, another shocking revelation was that The Weeknd received three nominations after the pop star claimed he would not allow his label to submit his music for consideration for the Recording Academy Awards.

Earlier this year, he angrily criticized the Grammys and called them “corrupt” when he received no nominations despite having the most popular single of 2020, Blinding Lights.

Although The Weeknd said he would boycott the Grammys in the future, he was nominated for his work on projects nominated for album of the year, including the deluxe edition of Doja Cat by Planet Her, and Dondaby Kanye West. His third mention was for his appearance on the single Hurricane, from West, which also includes Lil Baby.

“What I like is the fact that no one is thinking about what happened before, what was the controversy, what was the noise or where was this artist making music last year, ” said Harvey Mason Jr., executive director of the Recording Academy.

And noted that voters they focused on the “excellence of music” while considering nominees like Batiste and Kacey Musgraves, whose work intersects in different categories.

“Voters are really evaluating the music and they are not getting caught up in the reputation of any other outside noise or any artist stories,” he continued. “With that in mind, I think they are voting for things that they recognize as excellence.” .

Mason expressed himself satisfied with the new peer-driven voting system after seeing the list of nominees. He instituted the 10-3 initiative, which allows the more than 11,000 members of the academy to vote for up to 10 categories in three genders. All voters can vote for the top four prizes.

The new system replaced the anonymous nominations review committee, a group that determined the contenders for key awards. Some claimed that committee members favored projects based on personal relationships and promoted projects that they favored and worked on.

Everything can be improved

Harvey admits that the new voting system might not be perfect at first, but he believes the initiative will produce fair results in the long run.

“I know that not everything turned out perfect, ” he said.” I know that there will be some people who will feel left out or that we missed a nomination here or there. That makes me sad because I don’t want anyone to have that feeling. But I feel we are going in the right direction. I am satisfied with the way our voters did the job. ”

For the first time, the academy expanded the number of nominees in the general field categories from eight to 10. The change impacts categories such as record, album and song of the year, as well as best new artist.

Harvey said the academy increased the number of nominees in the general categories after seeing an increase in voter turnout over the past year, the acceptance of new member invitations and more than 21,730 works submitted for Grammy consideration.

“We thought the time was right, ” he said.” We saw an opportunity to do what academia does, which is highlighting music, highlighting the industry and highlighting excellence in a broader way. With the change in our voting structure, we do not have a nomination review committee“he added.

And he concluded: “This gives our voters the opportunity to have their voices heard, but it also gives them the opportunity to have a larger group from which to draw that winner who takes home the Grammy when the time comes. ‘ .
