Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Halftime’ Doc Reveals Why Daughter Emme’s Super Bowl Moment Almost Didn’t Happen

Jennifer Lopez’s new documentary, half the timeGiving fans an inside look at her phenomenal Super Bowl halftime performance, which she co-headlined with Shakira and portrayed Lopez’s daughter, Emme.

While the halftime show was celebrated for its message and its undeniable entertainment value, the new doc — which premiered Wednesday at the Tribeca Festival in New York City — revealed a rollercoaster of behind-the-scenes changes and struggles.

One of the first struggles came from having two headliners — largely because he felt it took both him and Shakira away from presenting them for the halftime show.

“It’s the worst idea in the world that two people do the Super Bowl,” Lopez declared at one point in what would be her performance within the constraints the NFL placed on her team. “It was the worst idea in the world.”

Lopez’s longtime manager Benny Medina echoed his sentiments, criticizing the NFL or thinking they needed two Latina women to headline the halftime show.

However, one of the show’s biggest moments came when Lopez and Shakira were joined by Lopez’s daughter, who began their performance inside a metal cage singing Lopez’s tune “Let’s Get Loud”, before the trio played Bruce. Springsteen sang the classic “Born In”. United States of america.”

It was a powerful political message—through Lopez’s intent on displaying a response to Donald Trump’s harsh immigration policies and with the inclusion of Cage’s imagery.

It was also a moment that almost didn’t happen. The night before the Super Bowl — during final dress rehearsals — Lopez learned that NFL producers wanted to pull the cages out of fear of political influence.

Medina explained that the objections came from “the highest authority” without being overly specific, and Lopez recalled how she told Medina “I don’t care what you have to do, we’re not changing the show.” And the next day, the talented cast put on an incredible Super Bowl halftime show.

ET’s Rachel Smith spoke to Lopez at the premiere Wednesday, and the famed entertainer showed the film finally hitting theaters.

“It’s really surreal to be here. Being from New York at the Tribeca Festival,” Lopez said of her Doctor Who premiere in her hometown. “I’m looking forward to seeing the movie. I haven’t seen the finished project. I’m nervous, but I’m excited, and I don’t want to do it anywhere else but here. So, here we are.”
