“Gilded glamour is the theme of this year’s Met Gala, and I would say [my outfit] There’s gilded glamour, but in the future,” Mona teased. Black Diamonds.”
Choosing Ralph Lauren to dress her up for the event was easy for Mona, who praised the brand for how she “always stepped up and hugged me and suits me when I couldn’t even suit up at the time.”
“We have a wonderful, wonderful relationship, so going with him makes it even more special for me,” she said. “As an artist, I love to create, I like to collaborate… if I could just have one [dress] Right now, it will probably be the same. It is timeless, it is the future, it is the past, it is now. It talks about so many different decades and centuries.”
Once her designer was chosen and the theme was announced, Mona began her research.
“I thought, ‘What’s Ralph Lauren up to? What do I think can be timeless, that speaks to the past, the present, and the future?'” He remembered. “I saw some of his archives. [I saw] A look that I really loved, but I was like, ‘What if we make it to the future and I touch my Mona? What does he do?'”
“As soon as I saw the archives, I knew what I wanted,” Mona said. “I knew I could make it timeless, and make it even more special. I’m like, ‘This is it.'”
Three fittings were done to make the dress perfect for Mona, although some last-minute details were still being completed hours before the event began.
“Ralph Lauren has the best of the best, which is why they’ve been able to be this timeless brand that’s been around decade after decade,” Monae explained of her calm in the whole situation.
Mona tells ET that she is able to keep her mind cool by finding her center as the activity revolves around her.
“Sometimes it just takes 15 to 20 minutes and just going over things I’m grateful for, people I’m grateful for, experiences I’m grateful for, relationships I’m grateful for. The health I’m grateful for, and just giving myself something real and important,” she said. “As much as I love decorating and being creative and all that, even especially with fashion, I always say, ‘It’s the people who make the clothes, not the clothes that make the people. ‘ So, who are you? What are you bringing to this experience?”
“I have to have a good soundtrack… anything that makes me feel cinematic and like I’m in a movie, because that’s what the outfit is going to give you,” the actress said.
Mona said that “it won’t take much time”, as she makes many preparations ahead of time.
“I prepared a lot. I tried to prepare the night before, so if I want to get a pedicure, a manicure, I do it,” she said. “I do my makeup test at night so I know what I want my face to look like that day, so it’s no surprise.”
As for what’s included in her makeup look, Mona teased, “We’re going to do something again that oozes all that golden glamor, but in the future, something that feels timeless.”
“I think we’ve always wanted to look back and be like, ‘Wow, that was timeless. You can put this face on any era and it just works,'” she said. “We’re keeping it simple. I totally don’t like wearing makeup.”
As everything came together, Mona felt nothing but excitement and gratitude for the night to come.
“I don’t take it so seriously. I’m always about having fun, that’s the main thing. If it’s not fun, I probably won’t show up for it,” she told ET. “I am very excited about tonight… I am very calm inside. I am very excited. I am still alive and very happy.”
