talk with Beatriz during

– How did the idea of the first festival come about?

Several years ago I met a group of people, representatives of the UNESCO International Dance Council, who had come from Paris to Buenos Aires to form a local association. Through them we came to know that UNESCO had established International Dance Day. Angels Ruanova was the president of the new union and I, the general secretary.

We thought it was a great idea to celebrate Dance Day with festivities here, and that was the day of the people of the dance, for visitors to come, both for performers and the public, and to bring the dance closer to other audiences in general. We started 27 years ago and throats were always free,

-Were the girls’ programming standards changing over time?

We always wanted to have the most representative expressions of each genre. At first they were small lanes but later they grew and consolidated; It is a matter of great satisfaction that it is the artists themselves who present themselves, although everyone knows they are not going to charge anything.

I remember years ago when Julio Bocca to direct the Argentine Ballet, asked me why I didn’t invite him; There were only two days left for the ceremony and I told him, “Julio, the events are already printed”. He replied: “I don’t care, how can we not be at the feast?” And he participated in the program without being present.

-And as far as the inconveniences are concerned, what were you facing?

– Our main problem is the location. For a long time, while Kyiv Staff directed the Buenos Aires theater complex, We had Teatro President Alvear by the time it closed, And also with the Martín Coronado del San Martín Hall and the Teatro de la Ribera. Always at no cost. But for some time now, we have had to rent theaters from our limited resources.

The program for this festival 2022 features tango, contemporary dance, flamenco and three expressions of Argentine folklore. What made you decide about the greater presence of folk dance?

-Thanks for the many notes read in the diary bugle I came to know deeply about the Malambo de Laborde Festival, which I had hardly heard of before. In 2021 we present the Maria Ruanova Prize—the only dance award that exists in the country—now not to an individual artist, but to the festival as a whole.

And it got me thinking, Why not bring some of these dancers to participate in the festival? And so I invited a couple who play “Refalosa” and Malambista Fernando Castro. But I needed something else to cap off the folk scene, so I proposed to Rubén Suares, director of the Compagnia de las Trincheras, that he put up a perricón.

What dance expressions do you personally lean towards, even if they don’t influence the selection of the program?

– I started with Spanish dance at a very young age. Later I joined the National School of Dance and trained in classical ballet. And when I graduated, the folklore dance career had opened up and I entered there. Meanwhile, she was studying modern dance and American tap dance.

just I feel like I’m closing a circle and all that comes back to me; I think dance should always communicate an emotion, no matter what “language” it uses. And in that sense, dance is one.
