Time Jump From ‘Riverdale’: What’s Next For Barchie, Bughead, Varchie And Choni After 7 Years Separate (Exclusive)

It’s amazing. Time goes by. And madness takes its toll … it did too Riverdale just give us a time jump? More like a jump in time!

It’s okay. This is not Rocky’s Horror Picture Show, but we certainly felt like Janet (damn!) as we wandered around town with Archie and tried to figure out what had happened to him. Riverdalefor the past seven years.

Although we discovered many new and horrible secrets about our favorite characters, (Betty was kidnapped … again ?!), we are still trying to find out which Riverdalian had the worst time during the timeskip, who will be the narrator of our new Serie. , and when the identity of Toni’s baby daddy will be revealed.

Fortunately for him Riverdale fandom, we have answers to all these questions, and much more!

For the inside scoop on what’s coming up for their favorite partners, ET jumped left, stepped right, and called in the creator and executive producer. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for our traditional Riverdalesummary of romance!

ET: My God, Roberto! None of these characters have had an easy seven years and each person seems to have been through some kind of trauma. In your opinion, which character has had the most difficulties in the last seven years?

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa: It’s funny that you articulated the theme of the season before we even knew it, Leanne. As we worked on Season 5, it became clear that this was a season where all the characters were struggling with different types of trauma. You know, I’ll be honest with you, as we unpack the seven years, what we’ll do for the entire season, they’re all pretty bad. Like, originally, Jughead was going to be the least traumatizing, but as we accumulate details, now it will be, in a way, the most horrible. They are all pretty bad and pretty dark, as we’ll find out throughout the season. There is no one who was saved in terms of the trauma quotient.

Who is the narrator of the series after the timeskip? We’ve always had Jughead, but now it seems Toni knows the most about what’s going on in town. Are we going to see characters swap?

You know what? Really, [the narrator] it’s a convention that continues Riverdale. It’s not in episode four because the characters are disjointed, but once they come together we find Jughead narrating again and that’s for sure.

Nothing unites a Riverdale couple more than trauma. As we’ve seen, it’s clear that Archie is going to be dealing with a lot of PTSD from the Army, Veronica was involved in a helicopter crash, and Betty was apparently held captive by another crazy sociopath. (Poor Betty!) Of those in this love triangle, whose do you think will be the strongest bond in the future? Betty and Archie or Veronica and Archie?

It’s funny, you know, at the risk of spoiling anything, I’ll say that all the characters are reaching out and trying to reestablish connections, friendships, or relationships in the wake of their trauma. Now, after seven years, I think our characters need different things than they did in high school.

Roberto, should we do the traditional Riverdale Romance Rundown: Time-Jump Edition?

Yes! Let’s do it!

Let’s first talk about our new potential partner, who are Betty and Archie. Even though we saw in the episode that Betty has a boy, she doesn’t really seem interested in him. And KJ Apa told me recently that we get to see a lot more Betty and Archie scenes in season 5. What can you joke about Barchie?

Yes, I think you’ll see a lot more of Archie and Betty. The basis we said we had in the pilot is that Archie and Betty were best friends and I think that’s what drives their reconnection when we meet at Riverdale. And that’s another way of saying that we’ll see them together and what they share is really deep. Really deep.

When you say “see them together”, do you mean together as romantically or together as sharing many scenes?

No comment. No comment! [Laughs] But they are together in many scenes, that’s for sure.

You really didn’t do Chadwick’s character any favors because you immediately proved that he’s controlling, insecure, and basically like a mini Hiram. How are we going to see Veronica connect with her former love Archie now that she is a (apparently) unhappily married lady?

You know, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Chad is kind of a mini Hiram and I think we’ll learn why and how Veronica and Chad came together. But, you know, it’s funny, I think Veronica and Archie were very, very strong. Even after their breakup in the prom episode, we see in the prom episode that they wanted to spend time together and they wanted to spend the night together and be together. I think their attraction, affection, and love for each other is pretty paramount, so yeah, those two will also be looking for a way to reconnect. But I’ll say Archie won’t be with Veronica again, won’t even start to think about it, as long as Veronica is married to someone else. It just won’t do that. That is not what it is.

Let’s talk about Betty and Jughead. We saw on this week’s episode that the two of them have been in relationships recently that they don’t seem excited about. What is it like when we get Bughead back together?

I think the events of that Hedwig kiss and the conversations Jughead and Betty had, and didn’t have, in the graduation episode. [are important]. Jughead said we made the decision not to talk about it and we knew we were going to go our separate ways and we didn’t want the pain of that conversation. But now, I think things are really raw and painful still for Jughead and Betty. I think there are still a lot of unresolved feelings of betrayal and there is more awkwardness between Betty and Jughead than, say, Archie and Veronica because Archie and Veronica talked a bit more about it. Jughead and Betty really didn’t. Somehow he shot out and they didn’t have that great conversation that Veronica and Archie had, for example. So I think there are a lot of rebuilds and repairs that would have to happen first.

OMG we’re seeing that Cherly is Miss Haversham from Riverdale now….

So is! [Laughs] No, this is Miss Winchester from Riverdale.

Well, what can we expect romantically from Cheryl and Toni and how long are you going to keep Toni’s baby daddy a secret?

We’re going to keep Toni’s baby daddy a secret for a while, but I’ll tell you I think we revealed the identity in [episode] 508. And I think I can say that until 508 there is a tug of war between Cheryl and Toni. They both want to get back together, but they struggle to stay in sync on why and when exactly. And I’ll say, spoiling nothing, it’s been fun writing for Cheryl and Toni as separate entities and not Choni. It’s been fun storytelling for Madelaine and fun sharing stories for Vanessa, not under Choni’s umbrella, but there is a tug of war that happens. Hundred percent.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8 pm ET / PT on The CW.
