“Do you want to hear a story about why this bitch and I fought? It’s a bit long but full of suspense.” Thus began Aziah “Zola” Wells’s infamous 148-tweet thread that went viral in 2015 and became a great movie. Now, A24 has finally unveiled the trailer for Zola.
Taylour Paige plays the titular Detroit waitress who is seduced by a customer, Stefani (Riley Keough), to take a road trip to earn quick money dancing in Florida. What comes next involves a pimp (Colman Domingo), an idiotic boyfriend (Nicholas Braun) and probably the craziest 48 hours in Florida. And that’s saying something.

Paige hardly auditioned for Zolahe recently told ET. “The original script that I read was inherently racist and sexist,” he explained. “Like, a lot they took the tweets and just made up some nonsense.” That was before screenwriter / director Janicza Bravo and co-writer Jeremy O. Harris were hired to guide the story. “And they are simply geniuses.”
“It’s so nice to be in awe and inspired by the people you work with and to feel like they illuminate what’s already in you. I felt like Janicza did that for me,” Paige said. “And Riley Keough is, I think, the Meryl Streep of our generation. And Colman Domingo can do anything. He’s just incredible strength. And Nick Braun is a gentle and beautiful giant.”
Zola is in theaters June 30, 2021.
