Russell Wilson shares his top tips for keeping his marriage to Ciara strong (Exclusive)

Russell Wilson has a good thing with Ciara. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback and the “Rooted” singer have been married for almost five years and have two children together, daughter Sienna, 3, and son Win, 6 months. Ciara is also a mother to her 6-year-old son Future from a previous relationship.

ET’s Nischelle Turner spoke with the 32-year-old when he was named Walter Payton’s NFL Man of the Year, where he shared how he keeps his marriage to the R&B singer going strong.

“You have to keep it sexy, you have to keep it romantic, you have to constantly put each other first, and we have our date nights every Friday,” shares Wilson. “We try to do our thing and have our one-on-one time and make sure we spend that quality time doing something fun together. That’s one key thing.”

Wilson added that “communication is key.” “By constantly communicating,” he explains. “We are always talking, we always love each other, making sure to constantly ask ourselves how we are doing, this and that. We always want to make sure our souls are okay … We are always focused on that one.”

“So communication, keeping it sexy, and I think the third part is, as a man, we have to keep competing,” he says, before explaining himself. “We have to keep competing. I think a lot of times as men, I think we get so calm, you know, ‘Okay, we’re okay. Okay.’ And I think you have to keep that energy every day, every week and throughout. the time because it’s worth it. It’s worth it and I like to win. “

The NFL star emphasized the importance of “staying engaged” and “in the moment” in their relationship.

“It’s always knowing how you can help and always being able to take care of the children if necessary,” he says. “It can be in those moments, in those decisive moments, where you say, ‘She needs an open ear.’ But also, the sticky notes that she can leave or just the subtle things that she can send via text message or a video or you name it, those subtle surprises throughout the day. “

Wilson and Ciara, who are on the cover of GQThe subject of modern lovers are undoubtedly one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood and the footballer has even admitted that one of his biggest fears is losing her.

“Someone asked me the other day, ‘What is your biggest fear?’ I said, ‘Lose her because she means everything to me,’ “he says frankly. “It’s one of those things that [in] life someone will not be here, this or that. And I think the reality is that I appreciate every day with her because the days are numbered. We don’t know the number, but the days are numbered and I want to maximize each number. I want to maximize every moment and she is worth maximizing every moment, every day. “

Wilson couldn’t be more in love with the life he and Ciara have created together and being there for their children.

“The three of them all together … They are awesome. They just entertain all day, they are amazing, they are as sweet as they can be, super athletic, super fun, super attractive, they love music, they love everything,” she marvels at her children. “They are always dancing, always having fun and it is the best gift you can have.”

Meanwhile, Wilson also brought up what it meant to him to be named the 2020 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

“Tears welled up in my eyes,” he says when he heard the news. “We were in Mexico and I started thinking about my dad and how much he taught me, my mom and how much they were there. [for me]. My dad is no longer alive and my dad always loved Walter Payton. It makes me cry now that I think about it, “he expresses.” Being able to win the award and be honored with it, and just being able to go through that process, was really special. But what I really thought about was all the people along the way [that helped me]. “

“I think of all the people who have been along the journey. I think of my wife, Ciara, she has been incredible. She inspires me to do better and to do more. She is relentless, she is an independent woman.” he adds.

Additionally, the couple is not only there for each other and their children, but they also give back to the community, volunteer at hospitals, donate money to good causes, and talk about what’s important to them, including the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ciara and Wilson co-founded the Why Not You Foundation and recently announced the first Why Not You Academy. Scheduled to open in the fall of 2021, the tuition-free public charter high school will operate in full compliance with Washington State charter school law.

“We are very excited. We called it the Why Not You Foundation because my dad always asked me, ‘Son, why not you? Why not you?'” He explains. “My dad always asked me, but it was also the fundamental question we all ask ourselves. ‘Why not me? Why not you? Why not us?’ … If you want to be great at something, if you want to overcome something, if you want to overcome cancer, why not me? I can do this. ‘
