Michael Douglas is celebrating two decades of marriage to Catherine Zeta-Jones with a walk through memories. The two-time Oscar winner shared a story on Instagram about the first time he met his wife in 1998.
“I’m at a Hollywood screening at someone’s house and they’re showing Fox. And I’m watching this movie and I’m like, ‘Wow, who is this girl? She’s amazing, ‘”Douglas recalled in an audio recording he posted Wednesday, along with a photo from their 2000 wedding.
“A month later, I’m at the Deauville Film Festival … and I see on the program, the next day at the festival, they’re going to have Fox “said Douglas, explaining that he then asked his assistant to find out if Zeta-Jones planned to attend and if he would like to have a drink with him.
“So they responded and said, ‘Yes, Ms. Zeta-Jones is going to be here, she will only be here one night. She is in the middle of filming this movie. Entrapment with Sean Connery, but I’d love to see you and have a drink, ‘”he explained.
“So the next day she arrives, along with Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, and I have a drink with her. It was everything I expected!” he continued. “Then he invited me to dinner with his company and I thought, ‘This looks good.’
After dinner, Zeta-Jones had to rush out to a press conference to see her movie, and Douglas said that if she was interested, he would be at the bar if she wanted a drink after the screening.
“Sure enough, I must have hit a thousand because after the movie, I’m sitting at the bar, and like Lawrence of Arabia, this mirage comes through the lobby, “said Douglas.” I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God!’ We sat down and grabbed a nightcap. “
While things seemed to be going very well, Douglas admitted that he used a pickup line that nearly derailed their future relationship.
“I probably made a big mistake, but I looked at her and said, ‘I’m going to be the father of your children.’ And she looked at me and said, “I’ve heard a lot about you. I think it’s true. Good night.” And she left, “he remembered.” So she left [the festival] Early the next morning. “
“I thought I had completely screwed it up, but I’m happy to say that [later] made contact, and the rest is history, “concluded Douglas, who welcomed two children with Zeta-Jones: 20-year-old son Dylan and 17-year-old daughter Carys.
“Happy 20th anniversary darling!” Douglas wrote in the caption of his post. “I love you always and forever @catherinezetajones ❤️”.
