John Travolta talks about his experience with grief after the tragic death of his wife Kelly Preston

Losing his wife Kelly Preston to cancer was not easy for John Travolta. The 67-year-old actor opens up about his experience with grief following the death of his beloved wife in a personal interview with Esquire Spain.

“I learned that mourning someone, dealing with pain is a very personal thing,” Travolta told the publication. “Grief is individual and experiencing your own journey is what can lead to healing. Your pain is different from someone else’s journey.”

Preston died in July 2020 after a battle with breast cancer. Travolta and Preston were married for 28 years and shared two children: Ella, her 21-year-old daughter, and her 10-year-old son Benjamin. Their son, Jett, died in 2009 at the age of 16.

“The most important thing you can do to help another person when they are in mourning is to allow them to live it and not complicate it with yours,” he says. “Let’s say you lose someone and at the funeral you are very sad, then another person who feels sadder comes up to you and then doesn’t leave you enough space to cry. It would be like two boats plummeting. That is my experience. “

He adds that “while it’s great to have company, sometimes it becomes helping them rather than working through their loss and pain.”

“You don’t know how many people approached me … and then I was saturated with everyone’s sadness for not knowing what to do,” he continues on the death of his wife, adding that the first thing to do when experiencing a loss . and pain is “going to a place where you can cry without any interference.” “If I die tomorrow, the last thing I want to see is everyone around me sinking,” he says.

The actor, meanwhile, has made sure to be there for his children and support them in any way he can. In February, he and his daughter broke the internet when they recreated their famous Grease dance for a Super Bowl commercial.

It was magical, because there is no one else in the world with whom I would like to dance than my daughter, Ella, “he expresses.” It worked on many levels. First, as a great piece of entertainment that people enjoyed. Second, it allowed me to present my daughter on a huge platform, show her talent, her beauty, and it was also a beautiful tribute to her mother. “

“Kelly and I danced together. It was very important to us,” she says, noting that her video and her daughter’s video garnered more than five million views on social media. “Then we did a TikTok challenge and asked people to recreate the choreography and it was a success.”

And while he is still focused on his career, he is more selective in what he is choosing to do. But first come their children.

“First of all, I am going to ensure the future of my children, help them with what they want to do with their lives. It is what I am doing with Ella at the moment, with her films and teaching her to work in the industry,” he shares. “Ben is barely 10 years old. I want to help him evolve, he has his whole life ahead of him.”

Travolta, for his part, says he’s looking for “musicals, good dramas and good comedies.”

“I am very selective at the moment because I have the privilege of being one,” he says. “I’m just thinking about what’s next. The best thing I can do is try to get to the point in my life that allows me to enjoy it, experiment with dance and music, and enjoy the company of other people. You can enjoy your life and at the same time enjoying being with the people around you, enjoying dancing and music, you’ve done it. “
