Hilaria Baldwin is clearing things up. The 36-year-old yoga instructor and Alec Baldwin’s wife took a moment to apologize for not being clearer about her heritage, after being accused of exaggerating her connection to Spain.
“I have spent the last month listening, reflecting and wondering how I can learn and grow. My parents raised my brother and I with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both,” he said. wrote alongside a family photo. “The way I’ve talked about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained. It should have been clearer and I’m sorry.”
“I am proud of the way I was raised and we are raising our children to share the same love and respect for both of us,” she continued. “Being vulnerable and striving to learn and grow is what we have built our community on, and I look forward to returning to the caring and supportive environment we have built together.”
The controversy began in December after a Twitter user wrote about his “decade-long rift in which he poses as a Spanish person.” An Instagram user took it from there, sharing posts that questioned Hilaria’s ethnic and cultural background, as well as her accent.
Hilaria spoke shortly before the new year and said in an Instagram post: “In the past I tried to be clear, but sometimes people don’t report and write what you say. I was born in Boston, then I spent part of my childhood in Boston, part of my childhood in Spain … everyone is there in Spain now and I am here. So throughout my life there were many comings and goings “.
Although Hilaria was not born in Spain, her family lives there now. His brother, Jeremy, lives on Mallorca, a Spanish island in the Mediterranean, the same place where his parents, David L. Thomas Jr. and Dr. Kathryn Hayward, moved in 2011. Also, his first name at birth is not It was Hilaria, but Hillary Hayward-Thomas.
In an interview with The New York Times, Hilaria spoke about her connection to Spain and how her culture is something that she has brought into the lives of her children. He even sends his children to a bilingual school and they speak Spanish at home. The Baldwins are the parents of five children, Carmen, 7, Rafael, 5, Leonardo, 4, Romeo, 2, and Eduardo, almost 5 months old.
Meanwhile, Alec has been by his wife’s side amid the controversy. A source previously told ET that the actor “unconditionally supports and loves Hilaria in everything she does and this situation has been no exception.”
“Alec has always known that Hilaria is from Boston,” the source said. “They are focused on taking care of their five young children and being there for each other as a family.”
