Florence Welch brings a musical adaptation of The Great Gatsby to Broadway! The frontwoman of Florence + the Machine has been chosen to write the music for the stage production of the iconic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Pulitzer Prize winner Martyna Majok will write the adaptation and will work with Welch to write the original lyrics for the multiple issues of the show.
Welch, meanwhile, will collaborate with GRAMMY nominee Thomas Bartlett on the music for the production.
“This book has haunted me for much of my life,” Welch said in a press release announcing the production. “It contains some of my favorite lines from literature. Musicals were my first love and I feel a deep connection to Fitzgerald’s broken romanticism.”
The Great Gatsby is considered one of the best American novels ever written, and tells a story of classism, wealth disparity, lost and unrequited love, all set against the backdrop of the roaring 1920s in New York City.
“It is an honor to have had the opportunity to recreate this book in song,” shared Welch.
Majok, who will write the book for the musical, said in a statement that she is “excited, honored and inspired to be working with this company of extraordinary artists and to be able to live in the beautiful and momentous words of F. Scott Fitzgerald.”
Premiere dates leading up to the Broadway engagement will be announced soon.
