Friday’s new episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier It gave fans a lot to think about when it comes to the future of the MCU.
From John Walker losing Captain America’s title and shield (and then sinisterly forging a new one), until Sharon Carter freed Georges Batroc to fight alongside the Flag Smashers, and Bucky flirted with Sarah Wilson (!!!) , “Truth” kicked off more of a few big things as the eight-episode series moves toward its end, and it also introduced a new player from comic book canon.
As Walker (Wyatt Russell) sat depressed after being stripped of his military title and honors, he was approached by a sharp-tongued figure, played by television legend Julia Louis-Dreyfus. By introducing herself as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the Dreyfus character assured Walker that she knew everything about him, including that he was no longer in possession of his shield, that government officials had demanded that he return.
“These guys with ties, they have everything to protect,” he told Walker, revealing that he also knew that he had taken the super soldier serum: “It has made you very, very valuable to certain people.”
“In fact, I think it was the second best choice you’ve ever made. Do you want to know what the first best choice was? … Pick up the phone when I call you,” he added, before putting it down. with a blank business card.
So who is Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine? (Or Val, as he says to Walker not call her face). In Marvel comics canon, she has been an Agent of SHIELD, partner and love interest to Nick Fury, the Russian sleeper agent, and, perhaps most notably, the evil Madame Hydra.
Vanity fairreports that Dreyfus’ character was originally slated to debut in the next Black widow movie, but due to pandemic delays, its Falcon and Winter Soldier cameo appeared first. However, the MCU possibilities for her character in this series, as well as future installments, are quite interesting: Is she the Power Broker that rules Madripoor? Do your Russian ties go back to the black widow’s red room? Are you here to start setting up the MCU version of Femme Force or Thunderbolts?
In a 2019 Vanity fairinterview, as Dreyfus looked ahead to future roles following his Emmy-winning run in Veep, noted that she would be interested in taking on a superhero role in some way. “Swinging with cables and kicking people in the face … shooting fire from whatever is being shot. I’d love to,” he mused.
