Derek Hough shares his thoughts on ‘DWTS’ milestone season and Len Goodman’s return (exclusive)

Derek Hough can’t wait to get back in the ballroom as a judge for season 30 of Dancing with the stars!

While recently speaking with ET, the 35-year-old dancer reacted to the exciting news and shared his hopes for the historic season. Prior to his role as a judge on the show, Hough competed as a professional for 17 seasons and holds the record for the most victories on mirror balls with a total of six.

“I’m so excited. It’s extraordinary. It’s amazing to think it’s season 30,” Hough told ET while promoting Disney + season 2. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, where he plays rival East High drama teacher Zack. “Wow, it sounds crazy saying that out loud. I remember I joined Season 5 and I can’t remember who it was, but somebody said something like ‘Oh yeah, this show has two more seasons left.’ And here we are, in season 30. It’s pretty extraordinary. But it shows how amazing the show is. “

“It is absolutely absurd, in the most fantastic way,” he added. “But also, it’s a great show with incredible dances, incredible people and characters. Yeah, man, it’s a pleasure to be a part of it. And I can’t wait for season 30.”

As many fans of the dance competition series have been wondering, Hough said he’s also curious about “what kinds of things might happen” in the ballroom when season 30 kicks off this fall.

“I’m curious what we’re going to do for season 30, because it’s a huge milestone. I’m curious what the plan is,” he joked. “Is it going to be like, ‘We’re going to approach this like any other season’? Or is it going to be some kind of tribute? Who knows? I don’t know.”

However, one thing we do know for sure is that Len Goodman will return as a full-time judge this season. He showed up pretty much a couple of times last season to provide insider advice, but he was in the UK and unable to travel due to COVID-19 restrictions. For season 30, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli will join Hough and Goodman at the judging table, which means that even more eyes will be on celebrities and their professional partners.

“I think it’s going to be great. I’m really looking forward to it,” Hough said, on what the dynamic of having four judges will be like. “It will be great to see [Len] and work with him. I’m looking forward to Len coming back because I think he adds a lot. I think just to have that Brit. You just need that Brit, man. You need it in the room. He is the man!”

“It will be interesting to see that dynamic. I feel like he and I are quite different,” he continued. “We are very different, I should say. So it will be interesting to see how we feel and if we disagree on a lot of things. And I’m sure we will.”

Professional dancer Lindsay Arnold, who took a season off last year to give birth to her baby boy, Sage, told ET in her own interview that she thinks having Hough and Goodman will make for a “tough, judging panel. Lasted”. . “I feel like it will be like a little battle of who can be tougher, which is frightening for celebrities, and for me, if I am a professional! ”, He explained.

Hough agreed that “it will be interesting” to watch, but added that his main goal as a judge is to remain “as useful as possible” for couples competing for the mirror ball trophy.

“I want to be like, ‘Hey, this would have been great, but work on this little element. And this way it will change your whole performance,’ you know?” he said of his style of judging. “Because that’s the point, it’s the little changes that make big changes. I always try to bring that out, because I really want them to do well. I’m always supporting them. I’m supporting everyone. I want everyone to go out and do great. “.

“But yeah, I’ll even be curious. It’ll be interesting. Like, ‘It’s okay, Len,'” he continued. “Because that’s really new for me, being next to the judging table with Len. I wonder what that energy will be like. And, in fact, more importantly, which side am I going to sit on? Being between Bruno and Len … or am I going to be between Carrie Ann? Because that’s going to … I don’t know. Who knows? It’s the important things, the important things! “

A premiere date, celebrity contestants, and professional dancers for season 30 have yet to be announced. While we wait patiently for more details, watch the video below to learn more featuring the cast of DWTS.
