Alex Trebek died Sunday at the age of 80 after a long battle with stage four pancreatic cancer. But on Thursday night, he appeared on a prerecorded episode of Danger!
Trebek and the champion of the night, Burt Thakur, shared an emotional moment after Thakur’s win when Trebek asked the contestant if he had family cheering him on at home.
“You know, here’s a true story. I grew up … learned English from you,” Thakur told Trebek, wiping away his tears. “My grandfather who raised me, I’m going to cry right now, I used to sit on his lap and see you every day. So it’s a very special time for me, man. Thank you very much.”
Shortly after his victory, Thakur tweeted: “Winning something money can’t buy was an indescribable experience. Being in such a diverse contest makes me proud to be an immigrant and an #American. If you looked at me, would you take a? of my smile and joy and share that with someone? We could all use a @Jeopardy #Jeopardy “.
Following the news of Trebek’s death on Sunday, Thakur tweeted: “When with proud joy we raised the red wine of Life
To drink deep from the mystical shining cup
And the ecstasy through all our jumps be
Death bows his head and cries.
I am overwhelmed with excitement right now and my heart goes out to the Trebek family. #Jeopardy #alextrebek @jeopardy “.
Thakur is not the only one Danger! contestant to honor Trebek. Record holder Ken Jennings also shared a tribute as did many who have competed on the show, as well as many other stars.
In November 2019, contestant Dhruv Gaur gave up his chance to win to show Trebek how much Danger! Contestants and viewers loved him in the midst of his battle with cancer. Watch the clip below to see his moving tribute.
