Charli and Dixie D’Amelio face a backlash over their recent video. The TikTok stars released “Dinner With the D’Amelios,” a new YouTube segment, starring themselves, their parents, and a surprise guest, earlier this week.
James Charles was the inaugural guest and joined the D’Amelio clan for a meal prepared by chef Aaron May. The sisters were quick to make their dislike for the food known, with Charli grimacing as Aaron described the food and Dixie running outside to vomit after tasting a snail.
During the dinner, Charli also requested “dinosaur nuggets” and lamented the fact that she has yet to reach 100 million followers on TikTok, a milestone she hoped to achieve within a year of hitting the million mark.
Commenters criticized the D’Amelio sisters for their behavior in the video, and Charli ended losing almost 1 million followers, going from 99.4 on Wednesday to 98.5 at press time.
On an Instagram Live Thursday, Charli addressed the situation and claimed that the moment with Dixie was planned.
“You didn’t see behind the camera. Chef Aaron and my content manager, Tommy, were saying, ‘Dixie, eat the snails, eat the snails. It’ll be fun! Just eat them.’ Because they know if you eat a snail He’s not going to react well, “he said. “It was like a big joke on the whole family. In editing, we didn’t want it to seem like all of our videos were planned. That was the first ‘Dinner with the D’Amelios’ and we were trying to have fun.”
Charli also cried during her Instagram Live and expressed doubts about whether she would continue to post on TikTok due to the messages she had received.
“Seeing how people reacted to this, I don’t even know if I want to keep doing this. These are messy things that people are saying. People tell me to hang myself, people who blatantly don’t respect the fact that I’m human. be, not good at all, “he said. “… You can hate me for anything I’ve done, but the fact that this is all happening due to a misunderstanding, I feel like that’s not right. If this is the community I’m in and the community I’m in meto, I don’t know if I want to keep doing that. “
Meanwhile, Dixie defended himself in a TikTok video, noting that she is “very grateful” for all of her success.
“My family and I have been working with Chef Aaron May for a couple of months, working on our channel content and working on his channel content, and [we’ve] “I made an incredible friendship,” he said. “… I never in any way wanted to be taken as disrespectful, especially in a 15 second clip out of context.”
Dixie went on to reiterate Charli’s claim that her reaction to the snail was planned.
“So basically my team knows that I throw up a lot. I throw up from the smell, the thought or the taste of anything. So when they saw the snails, they said, ‘Oh, let’s go find her and try to see if we can get a reaction. hers, ‘”he said.“ Basically that clip that wasn’t in the original video is my team and Aaron May trying to convince me to try the snail, knowing that I’d have a reaction. ”
“I love Chef, and I would never disrespect him in any way,” he added. “And maybe you don’t judge someone’s personality in a 15-second video.”
The girls’ dad, Marc, too posted a TikTok video after the fact, in which he said that Dixie’s vomiting is nothing new.
“Dixie, sometimes when you eat food you don’t like, you throw up,” Marc said as he sat next to his daughter. “We know it because we are his parents and we have seen it over and over again … Although it is a bit dramatic.”
James also weighed in on the reaction and wrote on Twitter that “this charli situation does NOT suit me.
“100 million followers in a year and they expect her to know how to be a perfect role model? Death threats because she’s a picky eater and made a joke about a milestone?” he wrote. “Being over 30 dragging someone half your age? It feels familiar.”
