Anthony Bridgerton is about to find his partner.
Bridgerton has cast Simone Ashley as the female lead alongside Jonathan Bailey in season 2 of the Netflix hit Regency, ET confirms. Ashley and Bailey confirmed the casting on their Instagram stories on Monday.
The next season, which begins production this spring in London, follows the older Bridgerton, Anthony, as he “intends to dominate the social season.” Loosely based on Julia Quinn’s second best-selling novel in the Bridgerton series, The viscount who loved me, season 2 will trace Anthony’s quest to find a wife.
Ashley will play Kate Sharma, who has just arrived in London and is described as “an intelligent and headstrong young woman who does not suffer from nonsense, including Anthony Bridgerton.” Her character is a reinvention of Anthony’s main love interest from the book, Kate Sheffield, who possesses similar qualities. It is unclear if other important characters featured in Quinn’s novel, such as Kate’s younger sister Edwina or her mother Mary, will also be reinvented.
According to Term, who first reported the news of the casting, the Bridgerton The creative team, led by showrunner Chris Van Dusen, envisioned the Sharma family as being of Indian descent. This marks an ongoing push from producers and writers for inclusion and diversity among their cast appearing in the fictional world of 1800s London society. Breakout star Rege-Jean Page, who makes his Saturday night live Host debut this weekend, he caused a sensation as the Duke of Hastings, alongside fellow black co-stars Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte) and Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury).
The seeds were planted throughout Season 1 about Anthony’s journey ahead (see: mentions of bees, tulips, and the Aubrey Hall family’s summer home), but most notably in the finale, when Anthony declared that he was ready to go. find a new viscountess after being painfully rejected. by opera singer Siena (Sabrina Bartlett).
Bailey recently spoke to ET to offer a sneak peek of what awaits Anthony on his way to find love.
“I think it’s going to get more exciting, complicated and sexy,” said the actor, adding that the series will surely “push the boundaries in every way” and “that the story will be really exciting.”
“I think Chris Van Dusen has this amazing ability to take Julia Quinn’s extraordinary books and her amazing worlds that she delicately filled with emotion and sensuality. And it takes it to another level, “said Bailey, when asked how the new season would parallel the narrative of the books. “So the fact that we’re following Anthony’s search for love shows that you know there will definitely be some similarities.”
Bailey was coy about whether fan-favorite character Kate Sheffield will be a major player in the new season, and now we know why. “After reading the second book, if Anthony gets to meet someone half as brilliant as Kate Sheffield, then he will be a very lucky man,” he said.
