Demi Burnett apologizes. The 25 year old Single The student took to Twitter on Tuesday to speak after a photography of her with a jacket with the Confederate flag resurfaced.
“Fuck it. People tell me I shouldn’t say anything, I’m going to say something about this,” he began in the first of two videos. “So, there has been a photo that has resurfaced of me wearing a jacket that had a Confederate flag on. That jacket was given to me by my ex, his dad actually gave it to me, and I had no idea how heavy the Confederate flag was. it held up every time he used it. “
“I only wore it that night, and it was a Yeezy jacket,” he continued referring to the Kanye West brand. “I thought it was cool. I thought, ‘Yeah, Yeezy.’ I didn’t even pay attention to it.”
According to multiple outputs, in a 2013 radio interview, West said about the jacket: “React however you want. Any energy is good energy. The Confederate flag represented slavery in some way. That’s my abstract view of what I know about it, right “So I wrote the song ‘New Slaves.’ So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now.”
Burnett went on to say that his decision to wear the jacket was “ignorant.”
“That is ignorance,” he said. “That is ignorant of me for not paying attention to the Confederate flag. Even more ignorant of me for not knowing how harmful it is to people.”
She later admitted that she “really screwed up wearing that,” adding that “I’m so sorry.”
“I’m disgusted with myself. I’m embarrassed,” she said. “It doesn’t even matter how I feel. I’m really sorry because that’s not what I stand for, that’s not what I’m doing. I’m really mad that I used it.”
In his second video, Burnett said that he has been “a self-absorbed, ignorant bag of shit for most of my life.”
“I really had no idea what I was representing by wearing the jacket. I have no more excuses than an ignorant, self-absorbed bag of shit,” he said. “Disgusted with myself. I stink for that. I stink so bad for that. Now I know better. I didn’t know better then.”
He ended his posts by encouraging his followers to “be better than me.”
“Don’t look at me. I hope I’m better than me, because I fucking suck and I really hate myself for being ignorant,” she said. “This is the time to change the world, make it better and I made it worse. So I’m very, very sorry.”
In response to Burnett’s videos, a person tweeted, “Where is your apology for saying the n word?” The same person shared a screenshot of an Instagram comment in which Burnett used the n-word. Burnett has yet to address the screenshot. ET has reached out to her for comment.
