The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chose the producer Janet Yang as its new president, the group announced Tuesday.
Yang, known for her successful repertoire that includes The lucky star club Y Larry Flint – The name of the scandalis the fourth woman to be elected to guide the reins of the cream of Hollywood filmmakers, and the first Asian.
The 66-year-old producer will replace David Rubin, in charge since 2019.
Members of the Academy, which recently opened a museum in Los Angeles, vote every year to choose the winners of the Oscars.
In a statementthe executive director of the Academy, Bill Kramer praised Yang’s workparticularly in areas such as “membership recruitment, governance, equity, diversity, and inclusion.”
“I am excited for her to take on this role and look forward to working alongside her in serving our members, celebrating the collaborative arts and sciences of film, and inspiring the next generation of filmmakers,” he wrote.
The Academy has been through several controversies recently, including accusations of a lack of racial diversity.
The group was criticized for the absence of black Oscar nominees during the #OscarSoWhite movement.which emerged in 2015.
It has since delivered on a commitment to double the number of women and minority representatives by 2020, expanding from about 6,000 members to nearly 10,000.
About 19 percent of Academy members come from underrepresented racial and ethnic communities.
