LOS ANGELES (AP) – Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and seven other counts of sexual assault yesterday in court in Los Angeles, California.
Members of the police department escort a 69-year-old former filmmaker convicted of rape in New York. He was wearing a brown prison suit and a mask.
Attorney Mark Worksman produced Weinstein’s statement a day after he was extradited from New York to California, where he is serving a 23-year prison sentence. Now he awaits a second trial on the West Coast and the prospect of another long sentence. The Weinstein allegations involve five women and ran from 2004 to 2013.
Most of the hotels in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles would have happened that Weinstein, who lived in New York, used Hollywood as his base for doing business.
Some happened during Oscar week, where his films competed for the Academy Awards before the #MeToo movement. Weinstein pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, four counts of forced oral intercourse, two counts of sexual assault by constriction and one count of use of force, all of which could carry a sentence of 140 years in aggregate.
The names of the women who accused him are not included in the documents. A New York jury found Weinstein guilty of raping an aspiring actress in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and of forcible oral sex on a film and television production assistant at Weinstein’s apartment in Manhattan in 2006.
Weinstein appealed that sentence, and asked for a new trial. Weinstein maintained his innocence and claimed that any sexual contact was consensual.
Los Angeles prosecutors first convicted Weinstein in January 2020, just as jury selection was preparing his case in New York.
More charges were added later in the year, and in March, he was formally indicted by the Los Angeles County Grand Jury. The pandemic and delays in the judicial process meant Weinstein’s extradition took more than a year. His lawyers argued his deteriorating health, until jury selection began at the Los Angeles trial, when they sought to keep him in a prison near Buffalo, New York. Weinstein’s time in custody in California will count towards his sentencing in New York.
