Gisele Bundchen Recalls Attending the Oscars With Leonardo DiCaprio and the Runway Outfit That Made Her Cry

From the runway to the Oscars red carpet, Gisele Bundchen has memories of a lifetime. In a newly released video for British VogueThe 41-year-old supermodel celebrated several milestones — and the outfit she wore to go with them — including the night she was with then-boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio at the 2005 Academy Awards.

At that time, the actor was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in the Aviator and Bündchen, wearing an embellished strapless dress designed for Dior by John Galliano, as they posed on the red carpet.

“When you go to a place like Oscars, there’s a lot of people and everyone’s screaming,” she described. “I remember just feeling a little bit, like, squeezing his hand and being, like, ‘Okay, here I am.'”

While the two have gone separate ways—Bündchen married Tom Brady four years later—the memory of that event is a cherished one. “It was nice to experience that once in a lifetime,” she said, “and I love that outfit.”

By that time, Bundchen was far from the unknown model she was in 1998 when she first walked the Alexander McQueen runway. It wasn’t without tears since she called it her first “big break.”

“It was one of the most painful moments,” she said, when presented with a photo of herself on the runway donning a see-through metal string top along her breasts. As the star recalled, she was selected for the show after dozens of unsuccessful castings in the middle of the “heroin chic” era. The Brazilian model, who knew limited English, wasn’t already fitting and learned at the show that she would have to wear the look. The teenager at that time started crying, but had to stop for the feathers on her eyelids.

“I was going the whole time thinking, ‘Oh my god, I hope my dad never sees this picture,'” she remembered. “… I just wanted to take a vacation.'”

In his memoirs, Lesson,, she recalled having a makeup artist paint a top on her body even after she was tasked with modeling as just a skirt on the show. “If you [the makeup artist] Didn’t show up then,” she wrote, “I seriously doubt I could have walked the runway.”

After more than 20 years, Bundchen reported British Vogue“It’s one of those things that makes you stronger.”
