George Drexler, an outstanding album and a new world tour that begins with six dates in Gran Rex

Thirty years after his debut album, George Drexler retains his enthusiasm, his ability to surprise, and his freshness when composing. Quite rare when you have traded so much practiced and polished for years and years. size now ink and timeA dazzling work that took shape during the pandemic and long months of imprisonment.

One of the first impressions left by the album is that Drexler has put aside the habit of having a mother’s ideological view, and this time he let himself be carried away by the path the songs were marking, or perhaps Limits imposed by Quarantine.

Always attentive to the exchange of ideas and reflection, the musician chews on the concept and explains: “Yes, it’s a possible confirmation and a very sharp assumption. I think it was my album with the most chaotic process, even “There was no concept up to this point. I always tried to put a concept on record which came later and I realized it was unimportant”.

-Did this concept come to you before, or when reporting and describing albums?

-In many cases, the concept is a cane or an excuse. When you present an album there is more to talk about than the album itself. There was no production plan here. What was a great loss of north and a drift in different directions. Actually, the record was about to be called blind stickWhatever will happen uncontrollably and without any concept will just have to be groped.

– At what point did you feel that the pieces fit together and you already have an album?

-Now I halfway through that it took me two years and two weeks to make the album, because it took me two years to think I didn’t have it ready, and then two weeks where everything was put together Was. Even the most distinctive elements were recorded by chance and were decisive, such as the orchestra, because one day I called Fernando Velázquez to ask for an arrangement, and the next day he told me that the Madrid Orchestra had quit And it was three days off.

Suddenly you had an orchestra at your disposal.

-Yes! “Let’s make records with an orchestra!” I told him. One day he brought me a song arrangement The Masterplan And I realized that it was an explosion of colors that I didn’t need. I only come from making an album with guitar (ice lifebuoy), something that would have been ideal for the pandemic, but he didn’t want to repeat the same joke.

You guessed the lack of options and the limits of the force.

-Sure. And now the idea of scarcity didn’t work for me, so in those last weeks I asked it to be lush, that it looked expensive, as if it had too many resources and too many people. I’ll tell you more: when we went to the Latin Grammys with C Tangana we still didn’t record anything with the orchestra and the basses weren’t complete. And two weeks after returning from Las Vegas, the album was already in its place.

– There you made the last stitch.

-Yes. On the last day we put out two songs and there were ten left, a round number with a total of 35 minutes and five songs on each side of a vinyl. Somebody told me it’s too short, so I started looking for records less than 40 minutes long and found stir, of The Beatles. And I stayed calm because it’s my favorite album.

New tour details

It has been said on several occasions during the past few months that the show at the Gran Rex in Buenos Aires will be the start of a new world tour.

However, it will not debut itself. According to the musician, “There was a dress rehearsal in Madrid and the first concert in Girona, both with this format, with the band the way we’re going to do here. I like to be able to play six times in the same room. Concerts in a row, repertoire and consolidated new format will be finished”.

– How is that format?

– The stage is very bare. I am going to have three men and three women facing each other, with a central aisle, as if the stage was divided by a river or a musical blank page, like an album cover. Then there will be redistribution, but that will be the pivot. The good news is that you make eye contact with the people you’re playing with. Plus you have half the public, but we’ll all see each other.

There are usually other musicians behind you.

Normally you don’t see anything and you are like without the notion of the band. It is a very innovative approach, focusing on female energy, a distinct melody and the presence of musicians with significant solo projects. This will also be the first time we’re going to work without a floor monitor, all with headphones, something I’ve never used. This is the final stage of the experiment, to see how it turns out, because in Madrid and Girona I was not completely comfortable.

album ink and time

ten subjects ink and time A fascinating variety, from the very beginning The Masterplan, which evolved from a “geo-tapestry” composed by some written Tenth and his cousin and became the first song created for the album. The orchestral background is revealed, the phrase “love is the plan” is revealed and even some phrases are recited by Ruben Blades himself.

Pursuance strange heartwith a distinctive McCartney bass line composed by Drexler himself, and white belt With his great chorus which mentions “start from scratch until they give us a white belt”.

the fourth subject is touch youThe hit single with Si Tangana, which provided another rhythmic success and paved the way to close side A of vinyl: the beautiful song that gives the album its title, features an acoustic sound with guitars and a rhythm Which is about 6×8. ,

The opening of Side B, or the musical wonder of listening to streaming, is addictive. oh algorithm, with Israeli artist Noga Erez. follow the bump love of art and growing climate the day you opened the world,

Shutting Down is one of the best songs on the album, blessed astonishment (with Martin Buscaglia), and Virtual Arrow SleepWhich works to tie the bow in a special and unique work.
