I told mom: let’s find a way to get ahead. Give me the little money you have in your pocket to buy sweets or sandwiches and sell them at school (…) I got a bag of sweets for two dollars and started selling each one for two dollars. I also made sandwiches and sold them at my school, which was run by well-off people.

At just 10 years old, Maluma faced both the family economic crisis and the separation of his parents. Selling sandwiches and sweets allowed him to contribute to the daily expenses that he and his mother and his sister had, in addition, in a certain way, it made him value work from an early age.

Every moment lived was beautiful. Because with pain or deprivation, they have made my family stronger. I would do anything for them, as I still do today.

When I started playing soccer, which I repeat was one more dream (I had) since I was a child, I was about seven or eight years old and I have those memories of my father taking me to play on the fields there, in Medellín, and of spending time with other colleagues who had dreams in common, we all wanted to be soccer players in Medellín, that was a very big dream in the city as it is repeated in several Latin American countries.

A) Yes, Maluma played for Atlético Nacional and Equidad Club Deportivo for approximately nine years; Everything seems to indicate that he was a good element, hence his permanence and constancy. However, one day he decided to leave his opportunities in the world of football to finally pursue his other dream, to become an international music star.

This is as far as I get, I don’t want to play football anymore, I want to make music”, were the words that Maluma said to his father when he decided to end his career as a footballer, as he recalled during his visit to The Hormiguero Spain.

As expected, his father shouted to the sky, because he did not want his son to miss out on his sports opportunity, because he had potential. However, the Colombian was firm in his decision and fortunately the situations played in his favor.

“Huevon, you’re crazy”said his father. “I look at him and tell him: ‘Suddenly maybe a little, but it’s what I want to do in my life’, I’m sorry. It was very traumatic for him at first, obviously. I remember very well that he stopped the car, he looked at me like that with a face of fury and said: ‘You’re crazy, what do you want to do with your life and apart from reggaeton, why don’t you go sing pop?’I’m sorry”.
