Disney has been putting a lot of effort into repurposing old school classics like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin and create flesh and blood versions of from movies, cases Cruella Y Maleficent.

The trend leads us to Pinocchio, but this time with a star-studded cast.

Pinocchio, the live action film, will be an adaptation of the animated version that Disney released in 1940 based on an adaptation of the Italian children’s story The Adventures of Pinocchio, from Carlo Collodi.

The plot: a man named Geppetto creates a puppet named Pinocchio that looks like a child. A magical fairy brings the puppet to life and promises to turn him into a real boy. However, the only way to do that is for Pinocchio to show strength of character to earn his humanity.

Pinocchio is named for being created with wood of pine trunk. While Geppetto sleeps, the Blue Fairy appears who, because he is a person sun, gives life to the wooden doll to the old man. The fairy tells him that he can become a real boy only if he is good.

But this does not end here: in parallel, Pinocchio will have a new and animated version for Netflix, but contextualized in the Fascist Italy of the 1930s. The movie promises to be a completely different version, darker and deeper than the one known in the history of this character in Italian and universal literature.

The animated film of Guillermo del Toro, Pinocchio, is already in post-production work at the International Animation Center (CIA) in Guadalajara, the city where the Mexican film director was born 56 years ago.

According to a statement released by DreamWorks and Netflix, it has the participation of Mexican technicians who will work on the production that would also premiere in 2022.

This is in addition to a series of efforts that Del Toro made with the intention of promoting the cinema of Mexican creators, whom he calls “the next generation of filmmakers.”

The animation center, which is also supported by the University of Guadalajara and the Guadalajara International Film Festival, will now witness Del Toro’s debut in animated film with the “stop motion” of the famous children’s story.
