‘Downton Abbey’ Cast Talks ‘A New Era,’ New Characters and New Locations (Exclusive)

Following the box office success of the first film about the Up/Down saga created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey is back with an anticipated sequel. a new era Not only does it reunite the beloved ensemble cast, but it introduces new characters and new locations that help expand the world of the franchise as it enters the modern era.

Raised nine months after the first film in 1928, a new era Tom Branson (Alan Leach) marries Lucy Smith (Tupence Middleton), helping to secure Crowley’s fortune and fortune in Downton. But marriage is far from the end of this story.

According to Fellows, executive producer Gareth Nem was “very eager to receive”. [the characters] out of their comfort zones, or at least some of them,” he says, before adding, “but I’m very of the opinion that Downton Abbey, the house, is one of the main characters in the story.”

“So to balance that out, I wanted a real sense of the coming 20th century invasion against this established lifestyle,” Fellowes continues. And as a result, for the latest marriage at a Yorkshire country estate with the family, a film production and upcoming news about an inherited villa set in motion two parallel stories.

And it’s not long before the world of cinema descends on Downton, led by Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery)—much like Robert Crowley (Hugh Bonneville) and a smattering of others—while the extended Crawley family seeks refuge in South France. Ka, where the previously unknown property was given to the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), is located.

As for Robert, “the idea of actors and actresses being spread throughout his portrait is truly frightening,” Fellowes says, teasing some of the tensions that arise at home before his character and others are set abroad.

This, of course, leads the family as well as some personal staff, including the devoted Mr. Carson (Jim Carter), on a grand journey away from the usual comforts of Downton. But what led to culture shock for Carson is greeted with fancy and interest among the rest of the family who are eager to soak up the French Riviera.

And this change of location, which was filmed on location, allows the film to feature vibrant and colorful fashion as well as Mediterranean decor not often seen in the franchise. “So, we wanted a light, airy white-walled house in contrast to the very typical architecture of Downton,” said director Simon Curtis, who took over the long Downton Abbey Director Michael Angler, referring to the villa in question, says.

“We were lucky,” says Bonneville, “to shoot in this wonderful villa”. it was beautiful.”

Laura Carmichael, who returns as Lady Edith, says, “She’s as beautiful as she looks onscreen. “It was such an amazing place, so we were pinching ourselves too.”

As a result, “everything just felt different,” Curtis says, with Leach, “it opened up the world.” And in more ways than one.

While Crowley grapples with revelations about the Dowager’s past introduced by widowed Madame Montmirel (Nathalie Bay) and her son, the Marquis de Montmirel (Jonathan Zacca), the new characters who make the biggest impact on the family return. Arrived in Downton.

“A whole alien world that descends upon that house,” says Leslie Nicole, who returns as Mrs. Patmore.

It’s also lovely to have some fresh blood, as we say, “West was pretty entertaining,” says Joan Frogt, reprising her role as Anna with Phyllis Logan playing Mrs. Hughes.

She adds, “Apart from being extremely handsome, she also has a very mischievous twinkle in her.”

Among them is Mary’s astonished embrace of the modern world that many in her family are so distant from. And within that is the fact that the film industry itself is undergoing a major transformation, as it transitions from silent films to talkies.

“That’s right. We learned a lot about making silent films and silent films,” says Dancy. “It was fun to bring it to Downton and shake that world up a little bit.”

And the presence of the silent film leads to some unexpected revelations for many living up and down. “So, it’s fabulous and charming and interesting,” Nicole teases. “But then there are some surprises in that story that you won’t see coming.”
