In the Marvel comic canon, Madame Webb is a clairvoyant mutant who has served as Peter Parker’s mentor to Spider-Man, with several heroes calling themselves Spider-Women. role of actress Cha Cha Real Smooth, Although, Definitely a little more grounded. Johnson stars as the single mother of an autistic daughter who becomes close with a bar mitzvah party host played by the film’s writer and director, Cooper Raff.

The film, which also stars Leslie Mann, Brad Garrett, Raul Castillo and more, has earned positive reviews at festivals such as Sundance, SXSW and Tribeca ahead of its Apple TV+ debut on June 17. According to Johnson and Raff, the success is due in part to the loose structure on set, which allowed the film’s talented cast to improvise and change lines on the fly.

“Everyone on the set was so funny,” Raff told ET. “We all had very shared sensibilities of humor and sensitivity. It was really fun to let Dakota and Leslie and Brad say what they wanted to say and throw off the script a little bit.”

“Cooper was super cooperative and especially in this way he, like me, has the ability to learn lines very quickly,” agreed Johnson. “So we could have already rewritten a whole scene… it was like a real cohesive story.”

“People usually get angry with me because I want to do this,” she teased. “I feel now because it’s my film, I was the producer of it, no one could have told me I couldn’t do it.”

So did Johnson ask his famous mother, Melanie Griffith, for any tips on playing a matriarch in the film? “No,” admitted the actress with a laugh. “I think knowing what she’s like as a mom is so embedded in me. I didn’t really need to ask her what she does. I’m very aware.”

Cha Cha Real Smooth Debuts on Apple TV+ and in limited theaters on June 17th.
