Clayton Echard faced several rejections prior to his first rose ceremony. ET’s Lauren Zima spoke to the new bachelor after the season premiere on Monday, and the 28-year-old medical sales rep responded to three women leaving the show early.
While fans watched Salley, still heartbroken because she canceled her wedding, get off the limo driveways and Claire, who “hated” Clayton after talking to them, walk away before the rose ceremony, they may not have noticed that a third woman made the departure earlier too.
That woman was Samantha, who arrived in a bikini in a bubble bath and was no longer on TV. As for what happened to her, Clayton told ET, “That’s a great question.”
“I don’t know exactly what happened. As for the reason, your guess is as good as mine, ”he said. “… She went home, yes … I don’t know [why]”I’m not sure what happened there.”
Shedding some light on the situation on Instagram, Samantha revealed, “Clayton and I spoke privately the first night. He was attentive, charming, and kind. However, a romantic connection is important in a relationship my life, not forcing anything that I don’t feel. As much as I wanted to stay, it wouldn’t have been fair to try to steal his heart and take the opportunity of an all-in woman. “
Before Samantha’s departure, Clayton Salley offered his first rose after crying out about her would-be wedding. Although Clayton admitted that some people saw Salley’s recent heartbreak as a “big red flag,” he viewed the situation differently.
“After talking to her, I felt that she was very sincere. I thought that if she could only break mental blocks, things could work, ”he explained. “I think she was a bit scared of it, like, ‘What am I doing here?’ I think everyone has this night asking themselves, ‘How did I get here? That’s ridiculous.'”
“And to me I was just like, ‘Hey, let me just give her a rose so … [she won’t] I must be so nervous the first night. These are only together for a couple of days. If we don’t want to, we can always go our separate ways, ‘”Clayton continued. “That’s how I saw it. It wasn’t a big red flag. When it became one and I felt like she’s not here for the right reasons, I thought, ‘I can send her home, it’s no loss to me.’ “
While Clayton admitted that it “was hard to start the whole experience with rejection,” he tried not to take it personally.
“I don’t think it has anything to do with me per se, she just has mental problems,” he said. “I looked at it like, ‘Hey, there are 29 other women and I’ll just keep that perspective in mind and not let it scare me too much.'”
It’s the same logic he tried to use later that night when he heard Claire speak negatively about him after her makeshift tailgate.
“To look back on now, she clearly had some frustrations with me,” he told ET. “I understand when I look back on it [that] we have very limited interaction. I think she felt cut off. She felt that I didn’t give her the time of day. I don’t want to beat her up for it. There are a lot of emotions, a lot of stress, night one. I think she was just frustrated. It is what it is.”
All of the refusal, Clayton said, “has shaken my confidence a little.”
“You start playing this game, why did they leave? What was that? Is it the way I presented myself? he said. “But anyway, you just have to go back, they’re not interested for whatever reason, or they don’t have the right headroom, so just keep going, don’t think too much about it.” It’ll eat you up if you do that. “
While it didn’t work out with three women, Clayton made many connections on his first night as a bachelor’s degree. That was never truer than with Teddi, who made his first impression.
“I was amazed [by Teddi]. She is incredibly beautiful. She was playful with her introduction. I just noticed it straight away. That’s why I made her first impression, “Clayton said.” There’s clearly this early chemistry so I think people will see that as the show progresses. There is this strong connection. It started on the first night, and that’s why I felt very comfortable and confident, yes, to give her a first impression that night rose. “
Susie was also noticed thanks to her “slimmed-down” performance.
“She was also very playful. She had a little buzzer on her hand. It was a cheesy joke that said, ‘Did you feel a spark?’ But I think I like that, “he told ET.” I like someone who is confident, someone who doesn’t take themselves too seriously. She came out of the gate very spirited and easy to speak so there was a connection. “
The same goes for Rachel, who made “another phenomenal gig” using a 63-year-old retiree as her wing woman.
“It blew me away, but then she came out and had this confidence. [She was] very sweet, and then our conversation was so much fun, “said Clayton.” She has so much to offer as a pilot in training. It just has this unique background. I was impressed through and through … I didn’t feel like she was that nervous. I think she behaved very well. That is what attracted me. There was this clear connection. “
Clayton felt a spark on Gabby, too, though unsure how to react to her X-rated opening line.
“‘Hey, I want to sit on your face’ what should I answer that?” said Clayton. “I love a great sense of humor. What this joke showed me was that it’s not only humorous but also confident because you have to be to kick someone you’ve just met with something like that night . “
“She rocked it and that immediately caught my attention,” he added. “I just laughed a little because I didn’t know how to react. My grandma is looking at this.
Clayton was right to ponder his mother’s reaction as she definitely tuned into the show.
“I saw her on Facebook say, ‘Comment who you think he’ll end up picking,'” Clayton told ET. “She’s fangirling so hard. She’s all on social media.”
As Clayton thinks back on his trip and looks ahead to how it will be shown on TV, he has decided to stop focusing so much on what is being said online.
“I’m so critical of myself in general, I always have been, and that’s why I really over-analyzed everything at first,” he said. “[But now]… I can just enjoy it as it was. To see the first episode, I thought, ‘Wow, this is really happening. We are right in the middle of it. ‘”
As fans saw in the season preview, there is going to be a lot of drama. It all seems to come to a point when Clayton, in love with his last three wives, tearfully declares, “I’m so broken.”
“I didn’t expect to get emotionally to the point where I did. I’ve been going through the full spectrum all season and that moment was a very challenging environment for me,” he told ET. “… I didn’t think I’d ever get there, but that [happens] because I develop very, very strong connections and it got these kinds of reactions. “
How he fell in love with three women, Clayton said it was the result of his choice to be completely vulnerable during his trip.
“When I was with a woman alone, I focused 100 percent on her. I made it. I made sure. I thought it was right not to focus on others when I was with someone, with that I was able to build these strong connections. ” . And then I would go with someone else right away and just focus on them, “he explained.” I thought I would never meddle in such a way that I would fall in love with several women, but then it happened and then I fought it on. I said to myself, ‘No, there is no way you are going to fall for love with multiple women.’ Then I finally thought, ‘You know what? Stop fighting because if you fight them they won’t know where you are and then they could start rebuilding their walls. ‘”
As a result of the tumultuous journey, Clayton told ET that he had “grown so much”.
“Two months people will see how it all turns out, but I think it’s been five years of growth in two months,” he said. “I’ve been through so much and I’m a better person for it. I’m a lot more confident than I was then. I’ve grown so emotionally that I just feel very comfortable being open with my emotions … on a national platform. Everyone saw every single emotion. “
Although fans know he’s falling in love with the show, Clayton remains a mom about whether he’s currently engaged or not.
“I’m in a great position. I’m happy,” he said. “Ultimately, every time I can grow from an experience, whether it’s good or bad, I feel like it was worth it, and it was.”
