As Beale explains, Timberlake was reading the script, “because I was always asking him for his opinion on whatever he was doing,” when he asked who was supposed to portray the deputy. “He said, ‘Oh, who’s playing this character?’ I said, ‘Oh, I don’t know, maybe a local. We don’t have any money left,'” recalls the actress, who also serves as executive producer on the series. “And he goes, ‘ I want to play it.'”

“The Justin news came first and I thought it was great. Obviously, he’s going to bring a certain interest to the project from his fan base,” says Pablo Schreiber, who portrays Betty’s husband, Alan. “And for people who are married to work together and on the same set, it’s like one big family.”

Once Timberlake was added to the cast, co-creator and showrunner Robin Wyeth was inspired to cast Ritter after seeing a photo of him donning a mustache. “Robin was like, ‘Wow, Jason looks like he’s in his 80s,'” Lynskey recalled. “She was inspired by his cool, edgy fireman looks of the ’80s.”

Schreiber says, “It felt like we were a repertory theater company or something, you know, all husbands and wives to support. And that was amazing. So, I was really happy when the casting came out. “

Sadly, Ritter’s mustache didn’t make it into the series (“he had to lose the stache anyway,” says Linsky), but that didn’t hinder his onscreen relationship with Timberlake. The two have a great rapport, which is best demonstrated during the interrogation scene with Candy.
