Iftikhar Bollywood’s favorite cop was also an exceptional singer and painter

You will remember actor Iftikhar, who played the role of a police inspector in many of his best films like ‘Don’, ‘The Wall’ and ‘Law’. He became a successful actor but did not get much opportunity to play different roles in films as he played a cop in most of the films. Not that he had any grief, he was very happy that he is remembered for playing the role of a policeman in films.

Iftekhar was a very educated man. Born in Jalandhar, Iftikhar’s childhood was spent in Kanpur. After completing his schooling, he moved to Lucknow to do a diploma in painting. He loved painting as well as singing. To fulfill this hobby, he met renowned musician Kamal Das Gupta in Calcutta.

Iftekhar was 20 at the time. When Kamal Das Gupta heard his song, he liked it very much and made an album of 2 songs with him. Now there was a dilemma, what to do and what not to do, because after the release of the album, Kamal Das Gupta named Iftikhar for the film ‘Ar Takshak’, which he also confessed. After this film, Iftikhar acted as a hero in several other films. In 1942, another superhit film came out, called ‘Jawab’.

Then came the time of Partition, in which his entire family moved to Pakistan. Iftikhar came to Mumbai in search of work, where he met Ashok Kumar and from here his new era began. Iftikhar acted in about 70 films between 1950 and 1960.

It was Ashok Kumar who introduced Iftikhar to BR Chopra in 1969, who gave him a chance to work in the film Ittefaq. In this film he played the role of a policeman. After this film, the police uniform hit him so much that in almost every film he started playing the role of a policeman, which he used to be very happy to play.
