Blake Lively knows how to straighten her kids! The actress and fashion icon breaks down 19 looks from 2005 to present as part of the trendof her “Life in Looks” segment, and there’s a special Met Gala moment that she says reminds her daughters who’s boss.
“This is, undoubtedly, my favorite look ever,” Lively said of the Versace gown she wore to the 2018 “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” themed gala. “The Met Gala 2018 is a Versace dress. I get so involved in dress design, I don’t know if it’s just that I’m a Virgo, or that that’s what life needs.”
The iconic, sparkly burgundy gown looked a little different from the showstopper we saw in 2018, with Lively adding some of her own creative touches.
“It’s actually a dress they made, but it had a train that was like – it was a little train,” she explained. “So, we took this dress, and said, ‘Okay, can you guys add like an 8-foot train? Can you add the beading on the inside?’ There was interest in the middle, how it looked like it was too tight and pulling on the hips, so I was like, ‘We need to get that pattern in here too, so that it’s like a part of the dress. Look.'”
The crown she wore that night was also eye-catching, with jewelry designer Lorraine Schwartz crafting it from brass and brown diamonds.
“And it was just a headpiece that Lorraine made, with these brown diamonds and brass — it wasn’t even gold, it was brass — it was like bendable hardware store brass,” Lively said of the head piece. , which she paired with stunning emerald earrings that also got the Lorraine Schwartz treatment. “These earrings she made the night before. She took these huge emeralds and glued it to the gold earring of one of her sisters, Ophirra’s shield, and she glued an emerald on top, so, it was very temporary.”
She continued, “Christian Louboutin made the prettiest shoes. I love this look. I thought it was very charming.”
Lively’s three daughters, James, 7, Inez, 5, and Betty, 2, also find it surprising, with the 34-year-old actress using the powerful ensemble to remind her who her mother is.
“It’s something that when my kids are giving me the attitude, I’m like, ‘This is your mom.’ I mean come on — I try to let them know that I’m real-life royalty and they’re lucky I’m raising them,” Lively explained. “They don’t buy it. They don’t believe in it.”
Lively also touched on this year’s Met Gala moment – another Versace stunner. Lively, who was one of this year’s co-chairs, spoke about the New York City inspiration behind the dress and her head-turning outfit transformation.
“What an honor to host and wear this outfit. Versace transformed it,” Lively shared before diving into the meaning behind the look. “Instead of looking at fashion from the golden age, I wanted to look at architecture. New York has been such an important part of who I am. It’s where I want to be, it’s the love of my life – besides my family – So, I thought, ‘Okay, I’d love to come in a copper dress, and when I climb onto the carpet and turn the appropriate degree on that dress is patina — which is oxidized copper.
She continued, “The Statue of Liberty clearly looks shiny, like copper, and now it’s green that we have. So, instead of my performance, I wanted a dress to perform.”
That’s not the only detail in the dress that was a call to New York. The lines and draping are also a symbol of the iconic American city.
“This column of dress, the rows in it are an homage to the Empire State Building. The draping on the side is for the Statue of Liberty to the tip of the cap,” said Lively before sharing details about its copper look. green number. “And this is the constellation ceiling of Grand Central Station. Grand Central felt like a kind, really neat full circle moment because the first shot gossip GirlI’m on a train and I get to the station and this is a shot of Grand Central Station.”
Speaking with ET’s Rachel Smith on the red carpet, Lively opened up about her inspiration for the ensemble’s general design.
“I looked to New York City architecture for this event, and I loved the copper patinas,” she shared. “I asked Versace if we could do that and he said, ‘Oh my god, well, let’s try!’ And we did.”
The dress wasn’t the easiest to pull off, with Lively sharing that outfit was “quite heavy.”
