Harry Potteris one of the most popular franchises of all time, with millions of fans around the world plunging into the magical world of wizards every year through books, films, plays, theme parks, fan works, and more. However, the woman who started it all, author JK Rowling, has become a controversial figure in recent years due to her public statements about gender and repeated allegations of transphobia against her.

Given Rowling’s inseparable bond with all things potterHer fans were curious to see if and how the author would appear in the new one Harry Potter Reunion special on HBO Max, Harry Potter 20th Birthday: Return to Hogwarts.

As it turns out, Rowling appears in the special, but it is made clear that unlike the rest of the returning cast and crew of the film, for the anniversary, which marks 20 years after the release of the first, she didn’t attend any new interviews Harry Potter Movie.

Instead, the writer appears in a handful of clips – discussing her take on the film adaptations, Daniel Radcliffe’s casting, and more – whose titles each state that the 2019 interviews were conducted to be part of the Warner Bros. studio Tour now taking place at the soundstage in Leavesden, England, where the Harry Potter films were filmed.

Radcliffe, who starred as Harry Potter in the eight film adaptations of the bestselling book series, spoke out against Rowling in June 2020 and wrote a long essay for the Trevor Project in response to Rowling’s comments mocking a headline referring to “people who menstruate” which many found transphobic.

“While Jo is undoubtedly responsible for the course of my life, I feel like someone who has the honor of working with and continuing to contribute to the Trevor Project for the past decade, and as a person I feel compelled to say something about it Wait a minute, “wrote Radcliffe.

“Transgender women are women,” he continued. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and contradicts any advice from professional associations in the health sector, which are far more expert in this area than Jo or me.”

Radcliffe went on to say that, given the rate of discrimination against transgender and non-binary youth, “it is clear that we need to do more to support transgender and non-binary people, not to devalue their identities or to cause further harm”.

Emma Watson also spoke out in support of her transgender fans at the time, although she did not call Rowling by name.

“Trans people are who they pretend to be and deserve to live their lives without constantly being questioned or told they are not who they say they are,” Watson said. “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see, respect, and love you for who you are.”
