'American Idol' alums reflect on their most important moments and reunion for Season 20 (exclusive)

ET spoke with some of the show's biggest past stars at the 20th anniversary reunion special on Monday.

American Idol brought together some of the show’s brightest lights and most famous stars for Monday’s “Great” image Reunion” special, celebrating the show’s 20-year history. ET was at the star-studded event, and chatted with some of the alumni about their most memorable moments image trips

Justin Guarini — who finished runner-up behind Kelly Clarkson during the show’s first season — talks about a comeback with ET’s Matt Cohen image stage, and how it felt.

“Being back on stage – it doesn’t look anything like the stage I was on, they put a little budget this year and ever since I’ve been on it – it’s amazing to come back and see that the energy hasn’t changed.” It is,” Guarini shared.

“My favorite memory from my time image Must be my first performance I did live on television, because we didn’t really know what [the show] anything was going to happen,” he recalled. “But it felt so beautiful, so wonderful, and it was the beginning of 20 years of an amazing [journey],

Looking back on his toughest moment, Guarini recounts how even his biggest wrong move turned out to be one of his biggest learning experiences.

“One moment I just learned a lot from was when I messed up the lyrics of ‘Route 66’. It was our first big band night, the first time we had a live band,” he recalled. “I messed up the lyrics but I just kept going and I ended up doing my bit to get out of it.”

He said, “Since there was no social media as we know, there was none, people were watching my every move. I created this and it taught me to trust myself and trust me in the process.” “And it’s one of my favorite moments.”

Lauren Alaina – who came in as the runner-up of season 10 – her favorite memory was “Maybe when I fell down the stairs!”

“I fell down the stairs, I was running and it wasn’t a good idea, and I mean All Way down the stairs, Pinky broke, all things,” Alaina recalled. “To this day people ask me about falling down the stairs. So it really showed America that I’m a big idiot and I still have to laugh about it.”

Reflecting on the special episode, Ruben Studdard — who won the second season of the series — smiled, “It was really amazing, like, just being in the room. It just felt like a big high school reunion, should be here.” “

One recurring theme, when it comes to looking back on the show’s early days, seems to be questionable style choices. Many alums are still embarrassed by the fashions of the day — and even host Ryan Seacrest, who’s been with the show since its inception, has shocked some style decisions.

“It seemed like a wise choice at the time,” Seacrest said when asked about choosing Frosted Tips in the early season. “When one looks back, he realizes he’s made many mistakes in his career, and that was a big mistake. I’ll never shave that hair again.”

American Idol Season 20 airs Sundays and Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
