‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’: Robin Thede on Getting Over 40 Guest Stars in Season 3 (Exclusive)

If there’s one thing women out there a black lady sketch show Going to do, it has brought a season full of stars for the viewers.

The sketch comedy series returns to HBO for its third season this Friday, and Robin Theed, the show’s creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer, and star, is excited for fans to see what the new installment holds.

Speaking with ET’s Melicia Johnson ahead of the season premiere, Thad shared her thoughts about going into the show’s third run and breaks down her favorite guest stars this season, including Vanessa Williams, Ava DuVernay, Raven -Simone, Kel Mitchell and more.

“I’m living my dream. I’m making the show I’ve always wanted to make and the show I’ve been preparing for over three decades,” she said. “I’ve been drawing since childhood, so I guess you don’t feel the pressure when you know you’re good. But it’s not just me, isn’t it? I know I have a good team.” And so, everyone around us is dead on one goal and that is to make each season bigger and better than the last. I know we did that with Season 3.”

While Thead claimed that “he doesn’t really have any favorite sketches,” he shared that he liked the four main cast members — along with Theed — Gabrielle Dennis, Ashley Nicole Black and Skye Townsend — in sketches together.

“We get to see sketches that are coming back not just from Season 2 but from Season 1 that we haven’t seen,” she said. “So we get to see the funeral ball with Bob the Drag Queen and we’ll get to see a lot of things that are homage to the characters we’ve known and loved for the last season, but at the same time give love to the audience.” Who stuck with us and waited so long to watch these six episodes every year.”

The Season 3 trailer revealed that fans will see the return of favorite characters such as Black’s Invisible Detective, Trinity, and Thed’s Dr. Hadassah Olayinka Ali-Youngman, pre-Ph.D. It also gave a sneak peek into the six-episode season’s 40+ celebrity guest stars, including Michaela J. Rodriguez, Michael Alley, Bob the Drag Queen, Vanessa Williams, Lonnie Love, and Essence Atkins, just to name a few.

“I’m in awe of each and every one of them,” the actress said of the star-studded guest appearance. “I’m so excited to see her — I mean, who thought Ava DuVernay would do a sketch? She was essentially playing an enhanced version of herself but she had an hour to shoot with us. I It was like, ‘I got you don’t worry.’ And she was like, ‘The script only has two sentences.’ I was like, ‘We’ll make this more. It’s okay.’ And literally on set, I’m just telling jokes. I’m like, ‘Say this.’ She was like, ‘I’ll only do this for you. You’re chaotic.’ And it was great. She’s amazing.”

But that chaos is the best part of being on the show, Theday explained. “It’s a safe place for Angela Bassett or Patti LaBelle or Gabrielle Union or Wanda Sykes or whatever, to come around and make a perfect sketch, but it’s also a place where Ava DuVernay, if she gets an hour So we can come and play and it makes sense, we’re going to make sure it makes sense.” Thede added.

“We don’t want the guest stars to take you out of the show,” she said. “We don’t want to be like, ‘Well, why were they the f**k in that thing?’ I think it always makes sense when they show up. So yeah, I’m very excited about it.”
