CATEGORY COMMENT: Ruth E. Carter became the first black woman to win this category for “Black Panther” (2018). With two other nominations for “Malcolm X” (1992) and “Friendship” (1997), she even has a few snubs under her belt, including “Dolemite Is My Name” (2019). Her work in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is another worthy entrance that could bring her back to the stage.

Other hot titles vying for attention for best costume design include Catherine Martin’s musical threads in “Elvis,” Gersha Phillips’ creation of Dahomey in “The Woman King,” and Mary Zophres’s next look at old Hollywood in ” Babylon”.
