Meghan Trainor is opening up about the pivotal health moment that inspired her to lose 60 pounds. The “All About That Bass” singer shared that a diagnosis of gestational diabetes during pregnancy was the wake-up call she needed to prioritize her physical well-being.
A New Focus on Health
In a recent interview, Trainor explained how the diagnosis shifted her entire mindset. “It started with when I was pregnant and I had gestational diabetes,” she said. The experience made her realize the importance of long-term health, not just for herself but for her family and career.
“I was like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to learn about health and fitness if I want to tour forever,’” she explained. “I’ve got to be at my strongest if I want to lift up my kids from their crib and not pull out my back.”
Trainor, who shares sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2, with husband Daryl Sabara, is now admittedly “obsessed” with wellness. She actively monitors her hormone levels and gut health, emphasizing her main goal: “I just want to feel good, because this job is hard to do if you don’t feel good.”
Facing Unexpected Criticism
While Trainor felt proud and confident in her new lifestyle, she was met with a surprising amount of negativity from the public. The singer was “rattled” by the criticism she received for her body transformation.
“I got a lot of hate for being thinner,” Trainor shared. “It’s weird—I’m finally so proud of myself and starting to love myself, and I’ve never gotten more hate.”
Many critics referenced her debut hit, “All About That Bass,” a song she released when she was just 19. “Everyone was like, ‘Why are you thin now? You’re ‘All About the Bass’ girl,’” she recalled. “I was confused, lost, really sad and heartbroken that I took care of myself but everyone’s angry.”
Finding Strength Through Support
To navigate the negativity, Trainor leans on her support system, including her therapist. “My therapist is like, ‘You give these strangers so much power,'” she revealed. She also channels her feelings into her music, with her new single “Still Don’t Care” addressing the online hate.
By focusing on her own well-being and tuning out the noise, Trainor continues her journey with a renewed sense of purpose, driven by health, family, and a desire to feel her best.
