While millions know Emmitt Smith for his record-breaking career as a legendary running back for the Dallas Cowboys, few know about the profound role he played off the field long before his NFL fame. In a recent interview, the Pro Football Hall of Famer opened up about his experience as a family caregiver, a journey that began when he was just nine years old.
A Caregiver at Nine Years Old
Smith shared that his caregiving duties started with his elderly grandmother, who was a paraplegic and confined to a wheelchair. While his grandfather worked various shifts, it fell to a young Emmitt to stay with her overnight.
“As the older son in the Smith household, I had the task of staying overnight with her,” Smith recalled. He admitted that as a child, it was easy to question the responsibility, asking, “Why me? Why is this tapping into my sleep time?”
The Lifelong Lesson of Empathy
Despite the initial challenges, Smith now views the experience as an invaluable life lesson. He credits his early caregiving role with teaching him one of humanity’s most important traits: empathy.
“The lesson that I learned about how to take care of people, how to think about people and the empathy that I gained throughout the entire process are things I can’t begin to put an educational value on,” Smith explained. “Empathy isn’t even taught in college. You have to learn that on your own.”
From Giving Care to Receiving It
As a world-class athlete constantly pushing his body to the limit, Smith also had to learn the difficult lesson of how to receive care. He described it as a completely different challenge, especially for someone driven to always be the provider for his teammates, family, and company.
“Receiving requires you to relinquish the power, relinquish the ego and learn how to appreciate the giver,” he said. Smith noted the importance of being humble enough to accept help when needed, whether from doctors or family.
A Message for Men
When asked what advice he has for men who may be struggling with the role of a caregiver, Smith framed it as a natural extension of a man’s instinct to provide.
“A man’s mentality is truly to provide, whether it’s emotionally, physically, spiritually or financially,” he stated. He believes that for those willing to be mature and humble, embracing the responsibility of caregiving is a fundamental part of moving forward and supporting the ones you love.
