The Colombian arts and entertainment world is in mourning following the death of the revered actor and national treasure, Gustavo Angarita, who passed away at 83 after a courageous battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his family in heartfelt social media posts.
A Family’s Heartfelt Farewell
His niece, actress Sandra Eichler, shared a touching message honoring her uncle’s spirit and contribution to the arts. “Until later, Uncle Gustavo Angarita,” she wrote. “Today I say goodbye to my uncle, to a great Colombian actor, a sculptor of the soul and of matter, and a man who lived life under his own parameters, with the freedom of one who never betrays himself.” She concluded, “Your legacy is carved—like your sculptures—in the memory of Colombian art and in the hearts of those of us who had the privilege of loving you.”
His son, Gustavo Angarita Jr., also an actor, spoke with Blu Radio about his father’s final moments. “Very difficult. But he has rested now; good things have an end,” he shared, confirming his father passed away peacefully and without suffering. He added that they had “very beautiful last days” together and that his father’s passion never waned. “He worked until the end… He never stopped being the person he was.”
A Storied Career in Colombian Television
Born in Bogotá on September 2, 1942, Gustavo Angarita became one of the most beloved and recognizable faces in the nation’s film and television history. His extensive career included memorable performances in numerous productions, such as “La Potra Zaina,” “En los tacones de Eva,” “Chepe Fortuna,” and “La ley del corazón.”
His immense talent did not go unnoticed. Angarita was a decorated actor, winning two prestigious India Catalina Awards—one for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ and another for ‘Best Lead Actor.’ He was also honored with a TV y Novelas Award recognizing his entire life’s contribution to television.
A Brave Battle with Health
In recent months, Angarita’s health had been a growing concern. He was admitted to the Clínica Colombia in Bogotá on April 24 for what was initially a routine check-up. However, doctors discovered his cancer had advanced to the stage of metastasis. This was compounded by other health issues, including a deficiency in vital nutrients, which posed a risk to his heart, partial loss of consciousness, and difficulty walking.
In an interview earlier this year, Angarita reflected on his condition with poignant fragility. “I feel really bad; I felt better before,” he admitted. “One is very fragile, and from now on it could be worse.” Despite the challenges, his dedication to his art remained unshaken, leaving behind a powerful legacy that will forever be etched in the history of Colombian culture.
