Production hub: Budapest hosts interiors and logistics

Ron Howard’s military drama Alone at Dawn is continuing active production in Hungary. The Amazon MGM Studios–backed feature and Imagine Entertainment moved its Hungarian shoot to Budapest in early November 2025 and has kept crews working across the Budapest area and nearby Fejér County.

Budapest serves mainly as a logistical and production hub. Interior sets—police stations, prison interiors and other controlled environments—are being filmed at studios and closed locations around the city. The production has avoided public street filming and major landmark use to maintain a low profile.

Polgárdi quarry becomes combat zone

The bulk of exterior filming is taking place at the Polgárdi quarry in Fejér County. The site has been transformed into a large-scale combat environment doubling for mountainous Afghan terrain. Main-unit shoots at the quarry include effects-heavy sequences with explosions, gunfire and complex military choreography designed for high physical realism.

Sources say the film follows the common model for U.S. studio shoots in Hungary: experienced local crews, varied locations and production incentives, even though no Hungarian service company has yet been publicly credited.

Low-profile cast activity and a concert visit

The production has kept a tight public footprint in Budapest. Cast movement has been discreet and no open-location street shoots have been reported. During a brief break in filming, lead actor Adam Driver attended a full-day classical concert event at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music on Nov. 15, 2025. The Academy later shared photos of the event, drawing attention to his visit.

Film context and next steps

Directed by Ron Howard and produced by Imagine Entertainment, Alone at Dawn dramatizes the true story of U.S. Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman and his role in the 2002 Battle of Takur Ghar. Amazon MGM Studios is financing and will distribute the feature.

Hungary is hosting a major portion of the film’s physical production before the shoot moves back to locations in the United States. With principal photography still underway and a local schedule now extending through Feb. 11, 2026, Alone at Dawn joins a growing list of high-end U.S. productions that have relied on Budapest and surrounding regions as a cornerstone production base.

No official Hungarian wrap date has been announced. Local residents and industry observers should expect continued activity at the quarry and controlled Budapest-area locations until production departs.
