George Clooney on Seeing His Old Roles: 'A Little Disturbed'
  • George Clooney was surprised on the set of his new film, “Jay Kelly,” with a montage of his past roles spanning 40 years.
  • The actor admitted to feeling “a little disturbed” by the unexpected blast from the past, which was captured on camera.
  • His genuine reaction, including grabbing co-star Adam Sandler’s hand, was kept in the movie’s final cut.
  • Clooney joked about the difficulty of watching himself age on screen, especially his “bad mullet” from the 1980s.

George Clooney got more than he bargained for while filming his new movie, “Jay Kelly.” The veteran actor had a candid and surprising reaction when director Noah Baumbach presented him with an unexpected trip down memory lane, leaving him, in his own words, “a little disturbed.”

An Unexpected Surprise on Set

In the film, Clooney plays a famous movie star, a role that hits close to home. The movie’s final scene depicts his character receiving a lifetime achievement award, complete with a highlights reel of his cinematic past. However, Baumbach decided to use actual footage from Clooney’s extensive career—a move the actor was completely unaware of beforehand.

“I didn’t know they were going to do [that],” Clooney revealed to PEOPLE. “The first time he shot, it was the first time he showed it to me. The first take is in the movie.”

A Genuine Reaction Caught on Film

The shock of seeing his life’s work flash before his eyes was a genuine moment, not just a performance. Clooney confessed that his on-screen reaction, which includes grabbing co-star Adam Sandler’s hand, was entirely real.

“I was really surprised by that —and a little disturbed,” he admitted. The experience of witnessing four decades of his life and career in a matter of moments was a powerful one.

“It’s hard,” Clooney quipped. “You have to really fortify yourself for seeing 40 years of aging on screen.”

Blast from the Past: The Mullet

Among the decades of footage, one particular look stood out for the actor: his infamous mullet from the 1980s. The hairstyle, which he sported during his breakout role on the sitcom “The Facts of Life,” was a memorable part of the montage.

“It’s not so easy with a bad mullet. It’s not great,” he joked. Clooney recently revisited the iconic hairstyle during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” proving he can still laugh about his past fashion choices.

“Jay Kelly,” which also stars Laura Dern, Greta Gerwig, and Billy Crudup, is currently in theaters and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting December 5.
