Watching your parents’ old movies can be a unique experience, but for Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s daughters, it led to some very strong opinions. Shepard recently revealed the hilarious backlash Bell faced at home after a family screening of their 2012 action-comedy, Hit & Run.

A Movie Night Verdict

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Bell, Shepard explained that their daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, had been asking to see the film, which he also wrote and directed. The couple finally agreed, but they weren’t prepared for the kids’ passionate reaction to a key plot point.

“They were very upset,” Shepard shared, referring to the scene where Bell’s character breaks up with his. “And what made me so happy is they were mad at Mom, not me.”

He added with a laugh, “They thought Mom was a b—h. They thought Daddy was a good boy with a bad past, and she should be able to overlook that, and I agree.”

An “Inappropriate” Family Favorite

Despite the on-screen drama and siding firmly with their dad, the girls ended up loving the movie. Shepard acknowledged that the film might not be standard family fare, but it served a purpose.

“We spent all this time making this independent film and Daddy wrote it and directed it and they were like, ‘We want to see it,'” he explained. “They loved it. It’s very inappropriate. And it was a great litmus test for our children.”

Life Imitating Art

The movie’s plot point about a rocky relationship isn’t entirely foreign to the couple. Bell has previously shared that she and Shepard briefly broke up about three months after they started dating in 2007.

“He sat me down and said, ‘I can’t have this right now. I think you’re wonderful, but I am still dating other people,'” the actress told PopSugar in 2017. However, just a few days later, Shepard realized his mistake and came back, a moment Bell says she still reminds him of.

After more than a decade of marriage, the pair remains committed to navigating the ups and downs together, focusing on compromise and teamwork to make their relationship a success.
