LOS ANGELES – As Robert Irwin dances his way into the hearts of millions on Dancing with the Stars, a close friend of his late father is sharing what the “Crocodile Hunter” would have thought. Actor Russell Crowe recently revealed that he believes Steve Irwin would have been deeply proud of his son’s impressive ballroom skills.

A Father’s Awe

In a recent interview, Crowe reflected on his friendship with Steve, noting that the beloved conservationist wasn’t exactly known for his rhythm. “Although Steve could read the rhythms of the seasons and every living creature, he was absolutely not gifted with a sense of musical rhythm,” Crowe joked. “In his hands, a tambourine became a deadly weapon.”

However, the Gladiator star is certain that awe, not envy, would have been Steve’s reaction to seeing Robert’s performances. “I think he would watch Robert dancing and how he uses his body, the strength and poise, and he would be in awe of his son,” Crowe shared.

Keeping Dad Close

For Robert, his father’s presence is a constant source of inspiration throughout the competition. The 21-year-old recently shared a touching pre-show ritual with his fans: he wears one of his dad’s old khaki shirts during rehearsals before every performance.

“It keeps me close to home, it keeps me close to him,” Robert explained in an Instagram video. “It just feels like a big hug every time I put it on.”

This isn’t the only way Steve’s memory has been honored this season. Robert and his sister, Bindi Irwin—who won the Mirrorball trophy in 2015—performed a moving tribute dance dedicated to their father earlier in the competition.

A Friendship That Lives On

The bond between the Irwin family and Russell Crowe remains strong. Robert expressed his gratitude for the actor’s friendship, explaining how it helps him connect with his father on a deeper level.

“He has so many stories to share of him and dad, and I feel like I build an even better picture of my dad when I’m around Russell,” Robert said. “It’s meaningful. He’s someone that I look up to and has truly inspired me.”
