Detroit's Early Xmas Music Sparks Holiday Outrage
  • Detroit radio stations have switched their programming to all-Christmas music, weeks before Thanksgiving.
  • The early start has ignited the annual city-wide debate, dividing residents on whether it’s too soon for holiday tunes.
  • Supporters cite feelings of nostalgia, happiness, and generosity as reasons for embracing the early holiday cheer.
  • Critics argue for a break between Halloween and Christmas, believing the holiday season is starting prematurely.

The airwaves in Detroit have officially been taken over by sleigh bells and carols, as local radio stations made the controversial leap to all-Christmas music. The switch, occurring well before the Thanksgiving turkey has been carved, has rekindled the city’s annual fiery debate: how early is too early for holiday music?

The Great Holiday Debate Ignites

Residents across Detroit have strong, and sharply divided, opinions on the matter. For many, the early arrival of festive music is a welcome dose of cheer.

A Welcome Wave of Cheer

“It doesn’t matter what you’re feeling any time of the year… once you put Christmas music on — it’s never too early,” resident Kanisha told reporters. Her sentiment was echoed by others who feel the timing is just right. Brittany agreed, saying the timing is “perfect for right now,” while Doretha took it a step further, suggesting that Christmas music “should be played all year round.”

For these supporters, the appeal is rooted in powerful emotions. They point to the nostalgia of childhood, the happiness the songs inspire, and the spirit of generosity that comes with the season. “It’s just nostalgia of happiness,” Kanisha added. Sylvia noted that the music “reminds me of childhood,” and Doretha believes “it makes you happy and ready to give. Be nice.”

A Premature Holiday Push

However, not everyone is ready to deck the halls. A significant portion of Detroiters feel the stations have jumped the gun, skipping over the Thanksgiving holiday entirely.

“Any time is too early… because it is,” said a direct Ahthavan. Others, like Sandra and Aidan, agreed that the holiday tunes should wait until after Thanksgiving. “Because you need a break between Halloween… and just like, to breathe,” explained Alexis. Aidan even admitted to being “a little bit of a Grinch” about the early start.

Beyond the Airwaves: Holiday Creep in Retail

This trend isn’t confined to the radio. Retail stores across the area have also been quick to swap their Halloween candy aisles for Christmas displays, signaling an ever-earlier start to the holiday shopping season.

Some businesses, however, are holding back. Emily Linn, owner of Nest and City Bird, said her store intentionally waits. “We all love holiday music but we do find after a while it starts to be a bit much so we start a little later and save that for the most festive time of year,” Linn explained.

As the debate rages on, from car radios to storefronts, one thing is clear: Detroit’s holiday season has begun, whether everyone is ready for it or not.
