Rapper Playboi Carti Faces Assault Charge in Utah
PARK CITY — Hip-hop artist Playboi Carti, whose real name is Jordan Terrell Carter, was cited for assault on October 2 after an altercation with a limousine driver in Wasatch County, Utah. The incident occurred just a day before his scheduled concert at the Delta Center, revealing a chaotic scene involving conflicting confessions from the rapper’s entourage.
The Driver’s Account of the Altercation
According to the police report, the limousine driver was transporting Carter from Park City to a rehearsal at Utah Valley University in Orem. During the ride, an argument between Carter and his girlfriend allegedly escalated to a point where the driver felt uncomfortable. He told deputies he stopped the vehicle and contacted Carter’s security guard, who was in a separate SUV, to suggest the couple ride in different cars to de-escalate the situation.
The driver stated that this decision “upset” Carter’s girlfriend. After everyone exited the vehicles, the driver alleged that Carter first “hit the girlfriend,” causing her to hunch over, before turning on him. “He then hit him on the left (s)ide of his face when he was not looking,” the report states. The driver told KSL.com directly, “I turned my head for just a brief minute… and this (expletive) hits me in the face.”
Responding deputies noted visible redness on the driver’s jaw that was “consistent with physical contact.”
A Trio of Conflicting Confessions
When questioned by law enforcement, the story became muddled as three different people reportedly confessed to the same crime.
Three Separate Stories
Deputies interviewed Carter, his girlfriend, and his security guard separately. The girlfriend claimed she was the one who hit the driver because he “got in her business.” The security guard, however, told deputies that he elbowed the driver using a martial arts move. Most directly, Carter himself admitted “he punched (the driver) for stopping in a weird place and dropping them off,” according to the report.
Aftermath and Legal Proceedings
Despite the conflicting accounts, deputies issued the citation for assault to Playboi Carti based on his admission and the driver’s testimony. The police report notes that Carter was “compliant with law enforcement but mad that (the limo driver) was doing this based on his status.” He allegedly asked if there was a way to “take care of it now,” but was informed the matter would have to proceed through the court system.
Carter complied with requests for photos of his hands but refused to have his face photographed for identification purposes. The case is now set to move forward through the Utah courts.
