The Battle of Brands: Victoria vs. Posh
For 20 years, Victoria Beckham has been in a quiet war with a ghost from her past: Posh Spice. The pop star turned fashion mogul has finally pulled back the curtain on her long struggle to redefine herself in a new, self-titled Netflix docuseries, revealing that her four years in the world’s biggest girl band cast a shadow that took two decades to escape.
“I’ve been in fashion now for coming up two decades and I was in the Spice Girls for a four-year period, and I’ve been so defined by that four-year period,” Beckham explained at a recent Q&A event in New York City. “I have to say I’ve been fighting those preconceptions for coming up to two decades now.”
Inspired by the success of her husband David Beckham’s 2023 docuseries, Beckham, she felt it was finally the right time to tell her own story. She believes she can now “reflect on my past without it damaging the brand that I’ve spent 20 years building.”
From Business Woes to Personal Truths
The docuseries doesn’t just focus on her pop stardom; it delves deep into the immense challenges she faced building her fashion empire. Beckham is startlingly transparent about her business almost failing, admitting it got into a “terrible state.” She recalls a pivotal moment when her business partner insisted they had to “re-strategize” the entire company, a challenge she accepted head-on. “I know what I know, and I really know what I don’t know,” she confessed.
In one of the series’ most vulnerable moments, Beckham also discusses her struggles with an eating disorder. She admitted this was never part of the plan for the documentary. “It just naturally came up in conversation,” she said, explaining that her body image issues grew after the Spice Girls were formed. “It wasn’t something that I planned to ever really talk about before.”
Embracing the Spice
Despite the fight to be seen as a serious designer, Beckham now fully embraces the persona that made her famous. “I will always be Posh Spice,” she declared, expressing pride and gratitude for her time in the group. She credits the band with giving her the confidence she has today.
“People say that they love the Spice Girls and the Spice Girls, you know, made them feel good enough. And the Spice Girls did that to me,” Beckham shared. “They made me realize that I was enough.”
After years of being told “no,” the journey of creating the documentary has been like “a year of intense therapy,” leaving her feeling proud and, for the first time, “good enough.” Victoria Beckham is now streaming on Netflix.
