Iyo Sky’s Turbulent Path to Stardom
Japanese WWE superstar Iyo Sky, famously known as the “Genius of the Sky,” is preparing for a highly anticipated return to her home country for the “Supershow Japan.” But her journey to the top was far from easy. Sky recalls her early days in the Japanese independent scene, a stark contrast to the massive stadiums she now commands. “Back then, I sometimes fought in venues with only a few dozen people in attendance,” Sky shared. “I shed tears of frustration many times.”
From Sports to Entertainment
Moving to the U.S. to join WWE presented a huge risk and a steep learning curve. Sky had to adapt her style from the sports-centric Japanese wrestling to the television-focused production of WWE. “Japanese professional wrestling is more like a ‘sports broadcast,’” she explained. “But WWE is a TV program… it’s no exaggeration to say that it’s completely different from a match in Japan.” This transition required her to master not just in-ring performance but also the art of conveying drama to a global audience through the camera, all while communicating in English.
A Legacy of Fearless Flights
Sky’s gamble paid off, leading to a legendary career. She captured the WWE Women’s Championship and later made history at WrestleMania 41 by successfully defending her Women’s World Championship. Her thrilling, death-defying stunts have solidified her legacy. “Everyone calls me crazy, and I’m happy about it,” Sky admits. “More than being scared or anything like that, what motivates me is having fun and enjoying myself. I will continue to fly for the joy on everyone’s faces.”
