Louis Tomlinson Opens Up on ‘Impossibly Difficult’ Grief

Louis Tomlinson is sharing his profound grief over the death of his friend and former One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne. In a revealing new interview with Rolling Stone U.K., the 33-year-old singer confessed the immense difficulty of marking the band’s 15th anniversary without Payne.

“It was really uncomfortable, actually,” Tomlinson stated, adding that the collective feeling to celebrate was more important than ever “on behalf of Liam.” He described his lingering feelings about the loss as “unjust and frustrating.”

A Different Kind of Grief

Tomlinson has tragically endured the loss of his mother in 2016 and his sister in 2019. However, he admitted his prior experiences did not prepare him for losing a friend.

“Naively, I thought that because at this point, I’m relatively well versed in grief for my age, that it might soften the blow,” he explained. “Super-naive. It’s very different. I’ve never lost a friend before.”

Tomlinson remembered Payne as the guiding force in One Direction’s early days, calling him the “safest pair of hands.” He noted, “We all looked up to him.”
